Hello everyone. I'm looking at buying my first ever motorhome, a GMC. I've been looking for a good clean one, to have a place to live. I'm staying in a motel at the moment and it's really expensive. I love to travel and mobility is a huge plus in my situation, for work. I'm happy to see there are many nice coaches up for sale right now in the $10-15k range, which is my budget. I stumbled on this one on Ebay which looks like a good one, from the pictures. It has a $10k starting bid and no bidders so far. Waiting on the seller (a dealer) to send me more pictures and details. What is your impression? Is there anyone else out there trying to buy this one? Are there any locals who'd be willing to stop by and look over it? It's in Helper, Utah and I'm in north Alabama, about 24 hours away.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GMC-Motorhome-1975-Avion-Transmode-/231749978222

I am a mechanic and all maintenance, repairs, etc will be done by me. At 32 years old I might also soon be the youngest GMC owner in the world...lol.

Thank you,

Nathan
I got a 23' ready for you to drive home right now. If I had everything done, I would want $8,000. As is, I can take $7,000.

40 miles west of Cullman.

Looks nice and clean........but yes it would be good to have a local look it over.

and the milage may not be genuine, somewhere there is set of pictures of brake pedals that can
be used to check that so long as the rubber has not been changed.

Helper, Utah, if I remember correctly is at the bottom of a steep railroad grade and its where the attached extra "helper"
steam locomotives to push the trains up the Grade.

I sent the guy a question, tires are 6 years old. Tires, all hoses, fluids and filters due, it's a $5,000 coach and another 2500 to be trustworthy. Where are you located?

Replacement tires are in the $150 range, so $900. Batteries are $100 or so each. I would offer about $5000 and see where it goes. Pretty low mileage for a 40 year old coach, may be an unreliable odometer. Interior photo looks good. Avion is nice with the twin beds in the rear. If you are going to travel to work sites, that give you extra storage.
There are lots of coaches available in the $10k range, he started high IMHO.

I'll pile on and agree that the price does seem high. FWIW, now is the time when you get to decide how all the necessary upgrade dollars get spent. The best solution is to work it out so they were all spent by the previous owner. Figure out exactly which years / layouts you're interested in, and then hunker down and wait for the right one to come along. By time time you're spending $10-15K, you can expect to find a coach that's in really good (but not perfect) shape, that's upgraded and ready to use, plus or minus a grand or two in little stuff that should be done to get it to 100% ready to roll cross-country.

Call me - I have a '76 Eleganza in Southwest Georgia that needs a good home. Much better to get a coach that has been driven than to fool with a low mileage barn queen. Mine has updates both inside and out. New tires 2015, new roof air 2015, reaction arm braking with 6 wheel disc brakes 2014, Mac Dash, 4 sources of Air Conditioning, new microwave 2015, 7 Alcoas, has had the Alex Ferrara magic "whammy" treatment, Mechanically excellent. Cosmetically, worn but probably not as much as the Avion on the net. Has a very fixable rust spot on the right front frame, but evaluation from the "experts" says it is an easy fix, and non stress bearing. $10K with frame fixed. $9K as-is. Lot of parts included. I am a member of this forum, GMC Dixielanders, GMC Sunshine Statesmen and GMC Motorhomes International. This is, indeed, a known coach.

Call me for pictures and details. 229-938-oo68. OR stickmiller@gmaildotcom

Call Stick before buying the one on the internet. You are much better off buying one from a guy on this list or in one of the clubs than a random dealer or ebay posting. Good luck. I'm in central AL so there are a few of us around. And I bought mine at 29, but I'm now 37...

Thank you everyone for your help and advice. It seems membership here is paying off already. I definitely agree with habbyguy's philosophy of getting the most upgrades per dollar spent. It's just that I'm very picky about such modifications and so far I had not seen any already upgraded coaches for sale which I really liked all the way around. That one on Ebay looks like a nice clean stock one but then again it's all the way across the country, and as you pointed out, overpriced. I'll still consider it if he will accept a lowball offer, but in the mean time, A Hamilto has given me one to think about and I'm interested to see what Stick Miller's rig looks like. Sent you an email, Mr. Miller.

Where in North Alabama are you Nathan? I'm just above Huntsville. You're welcome to come look at mine (not for sale) and talk GMC's. I know both those coaches. You won't go wrong with either.

I agree that 10K is too much for that coach. I paid 12K for mine because of many upgrades and promptly had to re-do most of the 'upgrades' the PO had paid jacklegs to do. I'd suggest either buying a known coach or a solid mechanical coach and plan on doing the upgrades yourself.

BTW, go to your control panel and update your signature and location. We'll forget your name once you are in another thread.

If the other guy doesn't get Slicks coach, let me know more about it. Im in
the market for one and would rather have a GMC than an overpriced diesel
pusher . Sammy

Nathan,

What you don't seem to know is that this forum is different than most. It started as a E-mail list and the forum you are reading is a mirror of that list.
This presents several issues:
E-mail readers do not see the header where Gadsden is posted. This is why we all have sigfiles.
The forum readers will get to see embedded pictures. So, we publish a link and an picture.
E-mail readers only see the first version of a post. So, we post a correction, if it is required.

It is also very successful. You can get quick and correct answers here from people with decades of ownership.

Keep up the good hunt and we hope to see you at a rally soon.

Matt

I'm just south of Birmingham. If you want to come have a poke around let me know. Ours was a project and it still only gets bits and pieces done but we use it just the same while doing so. There is also a mechanic in Bessemer who owns several coaches. He is worth getting in touch with even if you do your own work because he services a lot of the coaches in the Birmingham area and might know of a good one for sale. Mark Creel at Alabama RV. He does most of my heavy mechanical work since I'm not a mechanic even after staying at a Holiday Inn Express.

Take Kerry Pinkerton up on his offer. The man is a metal magician and does beautiful work...
