Brian,

Oil, filter, pan gasket (not cork), a car lift would certainly help.
Check the new filter against the the old one, as to shape of the pickup tube and especially the diameter of the tube going into the valve body.
They're not all the same. Bad things can happen with cheap imitations.
If your old gasket is still good then reuse it. Don't over torque the bolts.
If the pan doesn't have a drain plug and/or temp sender bung, this would be the time to put them in. Draining will be so much easier next time.

At Western States last fall, Manny torn down and reassembled a 425 in front of us...
JimK (as I recall) went out and got him a pan gasket and filter. The size of the filter pipe were it goes into the valve body was small. That is the case with many of the filters being shipped in from China. (I mean Many.) So, if you get a filter, be ready to see if it fits and return it if it doesn't.

Also be sure that there are no wayward O rings left behind stuck up in the valve body. Otherwise they can be forced up into the valves and create big issues.

Brian,

In addition to the shape of the pick-up tube, check the angle that it comes out of the body of the filter. Some of the filter pick-up tubes don't go far enough down into the pan.

Brian,

Here is a manual that GM printed out in 1969 of which bdub posted. It has
some good info on trouble shooting the TH425.

This is what you want in a Trans filter. The original filter that works well with the 425 is the AC Delco TF-169, it can be found but rarely. Check on Amazon and Ebay too for this and all the filters!

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36768-ac-transmission-filter.html

What ever you do buy it should be like this one on inlet and outlet layout

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36766-ac-transmission-filter.html
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36767-ac-transmission-filter.html
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36764-ac-transmission-filter.html

I make no recommendations on any of these filters, all are listed to fit the 425 transmission off a cross ref list for the 425 transmission. Need to check the inlet side to make sure that it fits snuggly with the o-ring into the transmission. If it is sloppy it will not work.

Some of these may not be available where you live. Some have found difference in quality and fit within the same part number, check what you get and compare with the one that you are changing out.

JR,

You are VERY fortunate to have found those TF-169 filters as they are rare as rocking horse poo! I have an eBay Followed Search for
them and have never found one.

BTW when you have some time could you take a better picture of the AC box it's kinda fuzzy and I note there's some extra numbers on
it that might prove helpful when searching for them.
