I got a call from a near by GMCer tonight who thinks he needs a replacement speedometer. From his description of the problem I tend to agree with him. I gave him a few things to check but I'm pretty sure we are going to need to replace the unit.

Does anyone one out there have one available?

Ken B.

Naturally we have used one in stock.
Need to know the range of speed, 0-120 or 0-85

A question for the Speedo Gurus. As long as I have the cable from the trans to the cruise control, do I also need the one from the cruise transducer to the speedo itself for the cruise and governor to work? I have an Idea.....

Johnny,

Short answer - No
The cruise will work. The governor is at the transmission, it doesn't need the cable at all. (But it might leak a little if that hole is left open.)

If you need the upper cable from the transducer to the speed, anybody that either did EFI or a Whosits Cruise should have one left over. (I do if you can't find one closer.)

Don't need the cable, thanks. I want to see if I can get a pulse from the cruise output. Maybe I can fiddle with the divide logic in a cheeeep tach and make a speedo out of it. A "round tuit" project.

Johnny,

I acquired a car from a friend that did not have a functioning speedometer. (An unfortunate circumstance, as he no longer had any need of transportation.) I just dedicated an older GPS to the program until I could find a reasonably priced replacement on Ebay. I still have the GPS in the car, and still ignore the working speedo.

My secodn GPS will do that well. I have a handful of the cheap gauges, and one more tach would match for all of about $15. The idea is at some point to take a piece of aluminum plate and make a dash insert with them in it. Removing the speedo cable makes it a bunch easier.

Am I right in thinking that failure of the speedo cable or transducer can damage the governor gear and stop the engine?

If so then a GPS speedo and aftermarket cruise control sounds like a good thing if you remove the cable and cap the outlet.

After I lost my governor gear Manny said it is possible that the cable can be draggy. I also had the inside of the speedometer cable connection wallow out, so the square cable slipped inside. The cable felt fine but with two signs of stress I decided it was time to do away with the cable.

My solution is a VSS on the back of that gear unit that runs the Delphi cruise and a VSS speedometer from SpeedHut. I got the 85 mph version so it looks, by needle position, like I am going really fast.

Part of the speedometer cable/governor gear failure has a cause called
header heat. Particularly when a reduction gearbox is fitted to the cable
where it exits the transmission case. The output should be lower than the
input which locates the cable further away from heat from the exhaust. I
usually insulate the lower cable with a bright orange braided nomex sleeve.
Aircraft and race cars use the stuff. Spendy, but it is effective.
