G'day,

We met with Oncologist today to review the CT scans taken last week.

Helen has cancer in multiple locations.

1) lungs
2) spine / ribs
3) adrenal glands

When comparing the CT scan taken last week to the CT scan taken in June:

1) the cancer in lungs has shrunk
2) the cancer in the spine / ribs has grown
3) the cancer in the adrenal glands is the same, however, it has no major effect overall

When comparing the CT scan taken last week to the CT scan taken in September:

1) there was no change in the cancer in the lungs
2) the cancer in the spine / ribs grown marginally
3) the cancer in the adrenal glands is the same

Helen is scheduled for a biopsy to check for mutations that would respond to an immunotherapy clinical trial that shows promise. If
her cancer has the mutations she has the following options:

1) participate in the clinical immunotherapy clinical trial
2) go through another round of chemo therapy
3) go for palliative care (no treatment other than pain killers)

If the mutations are not present then there's only options 2) or 3).

She's not in pain so at least the drugs are working. The latest problem is bouts of nausea.

Regards,
Rob M.

Thanks for the update Rob. It's good to have someone caring for her who can sort all the data and options as well as you do. Give her our best.

...Helen has cancer...
...her cancer...
Avoid phrasing it that way. She has been diagnosed with cancer and/or she is being treated for cancer. And it is NOT "her" cancer.

Never accept ownership or possession of it. Take control of the treatment, but never allow it to be "hers".

Rob and Helen,

You are both in our thoughts and prayers.

Words can not adequately address the concerns and suffering.

Susan was diagnosed with cancer 4 Feb 2012 and given a 50% chance of survival. She is surviving to this day and doing well with prayers, good food, exercise and lots of sleep.

We hope and pray for the best for you both.

With the very best regards,

Nausea is the worst part of the trip. Ask me how I know. Try ginger root powder.
Try Reglan.

Bob,

Thanks! I'll talk to Helen about getting some Reglan today.

Helen found out about the anti - nausea effects of ginger and here in Sydney I've bought her Kirk's Ginger Beer and Schweppes Ginger
Ale.

There is a company in Melbourne called USA Foods and I found they sold Canada Dry Ginger Ale, and White Rock Ginger Ale so a bought
one of each of those too so she can select the one that works the best.

By the way there's a discussion about tires on the GMCnet and the costs to repair the wheel well after a blowout, do you happen to
have any photos of the damage to your GMC and the cost to fix it that you could send me?

Regards,
Rob M.

"Ginger Snap" cookies have long been a home remedy for motion sickness nausea. I'll bet Matt Colie know about that! Swedish Pepparkakar cookies MIGHT be available in Oz.

My Mom used ginger ale to treat us kids when our stomachs were upset. "Cliquot Club" (Canadian) was her favored brand.

Reglan is for GERD, so I'm not sure how that would help (though it does
empty the stomach faster). Ondansetron works very well for nausea and is on the
world health organization list of essential medicines. I prefer the orally
dissolving (ODT) version, and apparently so do the insurance companies as
the non ODT ones seem to have really limited prescriptions.

I'm a little surprised her doctor didn't prescribe something for it, but what do I know.

Karen,

Helen has a prescription for anti-nausea tablets (Maxolon), she just wanted to try ginger ale and as her caregiver I wanted her to
provide her with every choice available.

ahhh, got it. In that case, candied ginger is good stuff to to add to the list.

Best of luck to Helen on her recovery. She's in good hands.
