This is an article by Marc Haibeck, owner of Haibeck Automotive the consumate expert on the C4 ZR1 and LT5 engine. He had noticed a pattern of head gasket failures where customers had used Dexcool in an engine designed for Ethylene Glycol, so he researched and published his results. Just some good reading as to why the gaskets fail thereafter. If our gaskets are composed with organic material, I would venture this would also apply to the GMC's Olds.

Originally, the Olds engines that were fitted into GMC Motor Home,
Agricultural Pump applications, and for Marine use were fitted with head
gaskets that were a sandwich type. The stainless steel component surrounded
the cylinders as well as the restricted passages in the cooling system.
There was an asbestos layer, (no longer used in any gaskets) which did an
excellent job of resisting decomposition and running straight water without
any antifreeze at all, as in marine use where no heat exchangers were used.
However, those days are long gone. The closest thing that exists today to
that is the so called Marine Gasket which still has the stainless steel
fire rings and coolant passage restrictors. The component that used to be
asbestos composition has been replaced with a graphite-like substrate. It
comes under several names, by different suppliers, but the one that I am
partial to is called Perma-torque. It can readily be identified by the fact
that it is blue in color and it costs twice what the regular automotive
head gaskets cost. The old single piece steel head gasket that was used in
passenger car applications intended for Ethelyne Glycol antifreeze use is
still available and is much less expensive. Many rebuilders still use them.
If your Motor Home is fitted with them, you need to be sure to replace your
Permanent anti freeze every 2 to 3 years. Otherwise, the anti corrosion
inhibitors cease to function and no longer protect the gasket from
corrosion. Then they rust out and either allow water to circulate through
restricted areas at too great a pace to absorb enough heat to prevent "spot
overheating" or they rust through around the cylinders and allow antifreeze
to contaminate the oil. This will quickly destroy an engine. But the choice
is yours. "Pay me now, or pay me later" " Prestone, Smeshtone, Who needs
Prestone ?" really is true. Ask Emery if you don't believe me.
