While traveling the 2000 (+) mile journey from Rapid City, SD to Lake
Wales, Fl I Checked the Trans Fluid on my 77 Birchaven and found that it
was "low". Later found that the dip stick was grossly mis-calibrated.
Long Story short, all was Okay.

That said, I was reading the THM425 Troubleshooting booklet published by
Hydramatic Div of GM. Two diagnostic tools were discussed at length.
Transmission OIL pressure and vacuum supplied to the Modulator. I'm going
to upgrade my dash with Ispro gauges and could include transmission Oil
pressure and vacuum.

Would the expense and effort to include these monitoring devices be of
value to avoid a transmission MELT DOWN? What is the consensus of the
Tribe?

Tom,
How are the burns coming along and how did the wife view your new look?

I would suggest the addition of a temp sender and temp gauge for the trans oil temp in the pan. IMPHO I believe that is the temp that you want to monitor. That is the temp entering the transmission to do work. Some monitor the outlet temp, but I think the oil temp in the pan is the most important. I run a sensor in my pan and the temp very rarely goes about 170F to 175F when climbing hills and most of the time sits at 165F. When we had our torque converter failure 3 years ago the pan temp shot right up to over 300F. Those two information points are very valuable in trouble shooting, but may be a waste of gauge space for normal use.

Hey;

So, I don't know. I've driven the Stretch for 50K miles with just the
original gauges and idiot lights, and I drove the CamoGMC (76 Palm Beach)
for 30K before that with just the original gauges. Just me, but I never
thought about any other gauges. The problem with me and gauges is that the
ones that I have seen are usually located at knee height and I just never
thought I would want to take my eyes off of the road long enough to look
that far down and then try to interpret what they were indicating (now if
they were mounted on top of the dash that would be a different matter (and
I asked Bert and Fay about making a fiberglass gauge cluster but they pooh
poohed the idea). I did ask MannyT for a tranmission a couple of times and
he asked me if my transmission was working Ok and I said Yes and he said No
transmission for me (indicating he only replaced bad transmissions). JWID.
