Ok, George, bragging rights time? We are near Reno on our way to Treasure Island for Fleet Week on Thursday. We, too, drove the I-80 across after a detour to Boulder to see our grand daughter. Lots of wind and rain the last few days and lots of crossing the Continental Divide plus other passes. Our 455 with Patterson carb and distributor has been a jewel. Averaging 3000 rpm uphill and on the flat (about 70 mph). With our 3.67 gearing (3.50 power chain plus 3.21 final drive) we have yet to shift into second gear despite going from near sea level at home to climb the Rockies to Rapid City, Boulder and now back across all the passes in WY and NV. I keep the vacuum higher than 4 inches and just let the gearing and strong engine do its thing.
The aluminum radiator dissipates heat as fast as the engine can make it so have yet to see higher than 200 degrees or lower than 55 mph anywhere, so far. We are around 3500 miles at this point and still have about a thousand miles to go before returning to Kerby, OR.
Oh, and while I have not formally calculated overall mileage, it looks like it will come in about nine mpg........on a carb no less. (Grin). Good to see you guys. Fun rally.

2500 miles dragging a 4000# flat nose anchor. 455 w 3.46 final drive,
Paterson Quadrajet and Distributor. Aluminum rad easily kept engine below
195 but the dern fan clutch (AC Delco 15-40108 [POS locked up solid]
changed to AZ 922747 in Pueblo) kept coming on regardless. Ragusa cruise
control kept it on 65 most of the trip. Did have to downshift going over
Raton pass but never got below 45. Vacuum seemed to run between 14 (flat)
and 4 (climbing hills) most of the trip. Averaged slightly over 7 mpg.
Well worth it to get to see all my GMC friends again and put faces to names
of friends I've never met before. I had an absolute terrific time with all
of you.
Lets do it again! :-)

Kerry Pinkerton and I, followed by Tom Pryor, arrived at Kerry's Harvest,
AL home on Sunday. Tom and I arrived here in Americus about 4 PM on
Monday. A total of 4213 miles from here to Pueblo to Rapid City to here.
The Cad got the 23' there and back without a hiccup, purring like a kitten,
at 196*F all the way. I don't calculate mileage, but it seemed pretty
good. After Tom's fan clutch overheating and scalding incident on the way
to RC, we were a little worried about him on the way home. Other than his
overfilling the transmission because of an inaccurate dipstick, his
almost-new-to-him coach performed well all the way to FL. We stopped along
the way and he drained the excess ATF down to the modulator, eliminating
some weird shifting.
Those were two of the best rallies I've attended during the past 17 years.
It was great to see again all my far-western friends and to meet some more.
Y'All Western Staters should have more events -- east of the Mississippi.
