G'day,
I received an email from a fellow GMCer regarding a problem that he had never heard of before and since I hadn't either I decided to
forward it to the GMC Brain Trust for comment.
A friend of mine (fellow GMC owner) told me a story about transmission fluid burping fluid out the dipstick tube and causing fires!
- He said it was much less a problem if you used a "remote" dipstick setup as the fluid would be "burped" out way away from the
headers - But if you used a normal "short" dipstick/tube, it could "burp" out onto the headers - He also said he had seen one "burp"
so hard, it blew the dipstick out of the tube!
I have spoken to Manny about extended transmission dipstick tubes and he noted that the dipstick (along with the vent above the
chain case) vents pressure in the transmission to atmosphere and some of the extended tubes have a cap that seals that tube which
could cause problems.
Comments please especially regarding the burping of fluid out the OEM dipstick tube.
Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
I am certainly no expert but having watched and heard Manny tear down and rebuild a transmission at the Western States Rally a few days ago, I am 98.67% sure he said that if the transmission is too full it will burp and that the vent "can" be clogged or mashed. As the transmission heats up lots of venting must take place. I suppose if fluid is too high it gets kicked around and spit out.
I have a Manny transmission and he puts the elbow in place of the little button like vent at the top and then a hose to the outside of the frame. Indeed, after the rebuild we had a bit too much fluid in the trans and it spit it out the hose.
For me the true question here is if it begins doing this, why is it suddenly so full? I am reminded of a recent thread where the poor fellow had a leak in the heat exchanger in the radiator and coolant was getting in to the transmission. I believe that this could bring the life of the transmission to a sudden end if much got in there. I would have your friend make sure the fluid was still nice and red. I sort of assume it would go yellowish and foamy if much coolant got in the transmission but that is only because the lube oil of the engine does that when coolant gets in the crankcase.

Two points: If the top-of-bellhousing vent is clear, I don't see how
sufficient pressure could build to erupt through the dipstick, which DOES
have vent slots around its seal.
Second, when I installed my remote dipstick, I made my own, retaining the
original tube and dipstick. There's a 30*-45* bend in the OEM tube just
above where it enters the final drive. I drilled a hole in that "elbow",
into which I brazed the 3/8" tube to run forward. I made sure the added
tube does not extend into the OEM tube. I can now use both the OEM
dipstick, with its vents, and the remote one (made from 1/8" wire cable).

Gary,
Yep, Double Trouble has one and I drilled a hole in it as you've noted below. However, I was concerned that (as we all well know)
when driving a GMC in the rain the area under the hood gets drowned so I drilled the hole in the BOTTOM of the tube so rain water
would not wind up in the tranny. Great idea, eh?!
NOT!
I discovered the first time when adding transmission fluid it ran out the hole I drilled!
DOUH!
Duct tape to the rescue. I have yet to take the tube out, close the hole on the bottom and drill on in the top. I will make some
kind of baffle to keep rain water from getting in it.

Rob,
Ken Frey used to sell a modified Trans dipstick tube from a Chevy van to use
in the GMC. Someone realized that it was sealed
at the top and suggested drilling a hole in the tube just below the seal.
End of problem.
Gary

Maybe it would be possible to drill a hole in the dipstick cap instead of the tube?
