In a previous post I asked for advice on a fuel gauge pinned at full. Today I finally got around to taking off the dash and having a look. While generally this is a sender problem, the gauge went to empty when the I switched tanks to reserve. The gauge also worked last year.

When I got back there I found a wiring harness terminated and duck taped. When I pulled off the tape, there was a diode or resistor crudely jammed between the two jacks. One end of the harness lead the the fuel gauge the other into the bowels of the dash. Both wire are brown. After fiddling with it, my gauge seemed to unpin but its hard to know for sure or for how long that will last. Anyone run into this little mod before?

Here are some pictures.

Does it open up? It almost looks like a fuse holder.

Didn't GMC put a diode in the alternator field wire on later coaches that looks similar to that?

Just moving the wiring harness could have reconnected an intermittent connection to your fuel gauge.

Boy I know that GM's build quality back in the 70's did not have the best reputation, but I sure hope that is not stock!! Confused

Right now it seems to be working, its a little hard to tell because I was only about 11 gallons off being brimmed, but its no longer fully past the full mark. If it is working I think I will leave well enough alone.

Dan,

The wiring diagram is available, so take advantage of it.
The tank senders are most notable in their lack of reliability.
A pinned over full fuel gauge is usually an open sender, but open anyplace in the harness will get you the same result.
I think you should start under the coach because that is most likely where the problem is located. If you a get a resistance that is something low as a number, the senders are probably good.

Matt - just back from the Manny built a trans show. What a show it was.
