Maybe some of you knew this, but I never heard of it - Until now.
I was trying to locate a friend on FaceBook. It is good for some things, just very rarely.
This was one.
There was a guy proposing to clean the windshield with steel wool....
I thought - Gee, Glass is harder than steel, I should try this.
Before we depart on any serious excursion, I clean the coach. Weather has not been right to do the painted sides, but I still did vacuum the carpet and was getting ready to clean and Rain-X the spinnaker size windshield. It is always a task and it can't be done (conventionally) if the sun is on the windshield because it will dry the glass cleaner too fast.
Here was my opportunity, the hard part was finding the 0X4 steel wool that I knew we had. I did, and it was an old ratty pad, but I tried it anyway.
WOW - The windshields cleaned right up. All the splattered bugs came off with very little work. I could actually feel the glass getting cleaner.
The glass looked great even before I did the Rain-x.
The only real problem is that the inside of the windshields looks pretty cruddy. I used to be able to get by just cleaning the outside.
Matt
Now I have been told be another that this was a secret that auto-detailers use to get the glass looking factory clean.

Now I have been told be another that this was a secret that auto-detailers use to get the glass looking factory clean. 20 something years ago I was renovating a house, with a small budget. The glass and aluminum shower enclosure had a thick layer of Kryptonian soap scum. I eventually resorted to an SOS pad. The glass looked good, but I had to use a lot of elbow grease on the aluminum frame since I couldn't use steel wool on it.

Many moons ago, when I was starting in the car business, we were taking a break from the orientation, which was in a room located near the detail shop, when I looked down and realized there were hundreds of rusted single edge razor blades on the ground. In our area car salesmen had a reputation for cocaine, but I was mortified of the sheer number of blades discarded. I thought what kind of place am I working for that the tools of abuse are so casually discarded? I soon learned that the detail shop went through more razor blades than windex and towels. LOL.
I do miss having access to the detail guys. $20 every other month and your car never looks "tired."

Many of the professional window cleaners here use SUNLIGHT soap and water.
It does a great job cleaning and does not leave streaks.
That's what I use on our vehicles, house and commercial properties.

At Pueblo and Rapid City, I gave away a few of the scrub pads I've recently
begun using. They're excellent for gently cleaning heavy, persistent
grease from hands when used with Dawn or similar dishwashing detergent. On
that trip, I also discovered another great use for them: Cleaning bugs
from windshields and even the painted front of the GMC -- without
scratching -- quickly erases the splattered insects.
The pads? Simply cut with scissors from a 2'x3' 3M air conditioning filter
-- the blue mesh stuff. No muss, no fuss, no scratch, and work great!
