My PPO installed a macerator pump, I'm guessing 15 years ago. The pump looks like it is has been leaking for quite some time where the pump housing mates with the motor housing. The housing is too rusted to get any make or model info off of it, but the documentation the PO gave me has the manual for a Jabsco 18950.

It looks like I can get a service kit for the 18590 for about $50 from Amazon. Amazon also has a new 18590 for about $130. Would you recommend the kit to try to repair the pump or should I just figure the pump is at the end of it's live and just replace the whole unit?

Thanks for your feedback.

Buy a new replacement -- there are also some generic macerators on eBay.

Then tear down the old one -- save good parts for spares.

For the extra $70. I would not want to find out what might be in that old macerator.

If it is rusted as you say, might be time for a new one.

It's not Minnesota rusty Very Happy , but it does look old.

That is what I'm thinking.

John,

That $50 kit is basically just a replacement rubber impeller, a gasket and
maybe a shaft seal (I didn't open my carry-along spare to check). It won't
enable you to correct any major problem with the macerator. Spring for a
new one -- $100 should be enough somewhere.

Life is too short to be fooling around trying to fix macerators when new ones are not that expensive as compared to the repair kit and the time required to attempt to do the repair. That's when you find out the problem is something else and you wasted the cost of the repair kit.

John,

Check these photos: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6769-seaflo-macerator.html

This macerator has the advantage of having a quick disconnect inlet. If you use a two pin push together electrical connector with it
to remove it all you have to do is remove the four mounting bolts, pull the connector apart, twist the macerator and it's out.

Should sometime get into your holding tank that shouldn't be there that winds up in the macerator you can remove it easily and
quickly.

Here's a link to one on eBay for sale for $89.99:

Thanks Rob! That looks like a good replacement. Do you know of anyone who has tried this unit?
