I understand when you retro fit an R12 System to 134a that you are to put the 134a type addaptors on as an indicator to future civilizations that the system is charged with HCFC 134a. What is correct if you put in HC12 Duracool? Schraders or add on 134a addaptors?

John,

Duracool is a configured to be used to replace R134. So, yes, it might be easier to put the 134 conversions on the access fittings.

But, if you don't want to mess with the traditonal access fitting used with an R-12 system, you can use your old service manifold if you get a 134 tapper to open the Duracool can and the adapter to screw a 1/4 flare (the old standard) on a 1/2 Acme fitting (the 134 service size). They are less available now than they used to be, but they can still be found at real parts stores.

I have installed Duracool in both types of systems. I would suggest that you install R-134 adapters. Then you can use a standard R-134 charging hose that is designed for R-134 and Duracool cans.

If you leave the adapters on soap them when you are done to be sure they don't leak .

I'm trying to work backwards on a mystery vehicle and I don't know what is in there. It's an R12 system that was retroed to HC12, but then it leaked and they took it in to some garage and there are now 134a add on's on it. Is there a way to figure out what is in there? I think 134a is toxic with flame present?? A geiger sniffer would be triggered by 134a but not HC12 or would remnants set it off??

John,

It is a pretty safe bet that if they took it to any garage (and particularly in IL) that it was filled with 134. And yes, 134 does burn to toxic by-products and it will also support combustion, so lighting the exiting stream might be a real bad idea.
