Ah Ha. The PO had a spare Steel) with 2 extra holes drilled and 2 Hex screws to hold the wheel on. There are 2 short studs that appear to have been cut to about 1/2” long. Measuring these shortened studs they are are about 5.5 inches on centre, the Alcoa holes are 6.5 inches.
So it as I thought, I will be fabricating a new plate with studs placed correctly.
It was a long shot, just thought I would ask.
thanks

Sir, our 76 23' only has the holes with the hex nuts. Real pain to install by myself.

There are enough "parts" coaches around in our GMC universe. Should be able to get an OEM one from someone. Would be heavy to ship. OEM had 3 studs for holding the spare wheel. And, they are awkward to remove and replace. Perhaps you could get the original holes reopened and put a set of studs in your current tire rack.

Matt,
You didn't make any comment and I couldn't figger out why you sent the email. Then I read what I had written in response to Chucks
message and the penny dropped!
I figger'd out what Chuck was saying was that instead of three studs welded to the spare tire plate he had three nuts welded to the
spare tire plate. Well at least that's what I think now.
Therefore my suggestion was useless!
At any rate a few more minutes of this problem rumbling around in the grey matter I figger'd out it would still work and it would
even be a cheaper fix!
Assuming that the nuts on the spare plate are 9/16 x 18 (same as the Alcoa lug nuts) and there is a through hole Chuck just has to
thread the bolts through the back of the plate and into the nuts. It doesn't matter if the nuts are on the "front" side or "back"
side of the spare plate it will work; he just has to get fully threaded bolts that are long enough.
Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, I am sure I could find some adapter studs (one size on one end, different on other end) to screw in and use lug nuts for my wheels. But then the 3 lug nuts would poke indentions into my vinyl spare tire cover and not be aesthetically appropriate. When I had the 16.5 wheels I had an Alcoa look alike hubcap on it to match the ones on the coach ( in case I lost one) and the cover showed the 8 covers on the hubcap which was ok, however only 3 would not. I have stud centered wheels with the long lug nuts. So I chose to keep the flush mount bolts for less wind turblances in the rear for better mpg.

Charles wouldn't the easy way be to thread studs in loosely hang the rim in place then replace the studs with bolts one at a time?

Rob et al,
It seems my note got lost...
All I wanted to add was that Gr.8 was a bad idea here.
I'll fill in the list of reasons some other time.
