Does anyone have any idea why this boot distorted like this?

Carl,
I have not seen a CV boot fail like that, but where there is a will there is a way. I would be too concerned, it may have taken a hit from some road object. Take the old one off, clean everything and add new boot and new grease and add the straps and reinstall the axle shaft.

I just finished installing a new one from Jim K, via another local GMCer who used it only to get home from a rally before converting to the 1-ton. I will replace the boot and keep this one as a spare. Just trying to figure out why it failed like this. Maybe the band wasn't tight enough and it twisted???

Certain ones of those had a non compatibilty with the grease. That rubber has cracked and hardened and curled up. Jim Can o Tomatoes has a unifit one with more pleats that works.

Carl,

When you replace you could leave the small band off as that's what Chuck Boyd does and he hasn't had any problems.

The last time I saw my good friend, Dan Gregg, he gave me a pair if the storied "blue sticky boots". They are used, but in good condition. I am wondering about the wisdom of using these. I know they were the hot set up in their day, and were supposed to last virtually forever. It is a lot of work to replace an axle shaft, and I don't want to have to do it any more often that I really need to. Any one have experience with these boots?

PS, In the process of cleaning the other side in order to grease the Lenzi bearings as per Dave's instructions, I discovered the other boot has a hole in it too. I guess I'm not surprised as they were both replaced about 6 years and 15,000 - 20,000 miles ago.

A used blue boot in good condition is as good as a new one. I would use them. If you leave the small inner band off it will not leak or bind.

Carl,

If you have a set of Blue Boots USE THEM!

I found a used pair on old axles at the Coop in 2007 and JimB GAVE them to me!

I installed them on Double Trouble and they look EXACTLY like they did when I installed them eight years ago!

If I were you I would:

1) Remove both axles
2) Disassemble both axles
3) Disassemble, clean, and inspect both pairs of inner and outer CV joints
4) Reassemble all four CV joints using Valvoline Synpower
5) Install the used Blue Boots on the outer CV joints and new boots on the inner CV joints
6) Install both axles

IF you check MM X-7525 / Section 0 - General Information / Page 0-6 Engine, Chassis, and Body Maintenance Schedule you will not find
any servicing requirements for the CV joints. Ken Frey has one outer CV joint on his GMC that still has the original copper band
around the boot!

Given the statements above I reckon you will never have to mess with them again. However, if you're concerned you could inspect the
outers in 50,000 miles. The inners maybe in 100,000 miles (their range of movement is MUCH less than the outers).

Thanks guys, I'll use the blue boots. When I got the coach in July of '08, it still had the original copper bands on the boots. Only one was leaking at the time. I suppose I can get the bands and clamps locally. I'll check into it on Monday, then hopefully have the shaft I took out today ready to replace next weekend.
