So I got the new replacement bridge rectifier from Applied. As I had read the terminals don't match the direction of the OE part. What I can't find is the technique for solving that problem...

Do I:
1. Try and modify/twist the 3 terminals on the new rectifier 90 degrees?
2. Try and modify the white plastic plug housing?
3. Discard the white housing and wire directly to the new rectifier?
4. Something else?

I searched but couldn't find an actual link to a thread or pictures of the modification needed.

Thanks in advance

As near as I can tell, you twist the terminals 90 degrees with a pair of pliers.

And there is a thread where it was stated that the only polarity marking was a "-" instead of a "+". No problem, the "-" goes to the opposite corner from the "+".

I made four very short jumpers to connect between the bridge rectifier and the socket.

Thanks Guys. I bent them 90 degrees but it was pretty hard to get them to line up. While continuing to "tweak" the posts it felt like they were getting weak. I think I am going to go the same route as Larry and make some jumpers.

Thanks again.

Thanks Gene.

Well Gentlemen,

I have some good news and some bad news...

Bad news = I did in fact snap off one of the terminals on the new bridge rectifier Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad
Good news = I rigged up some jumpers and soldered a wire to the stump of the broken terminal just to test the theory that the original rectifier was bad...I HAVE POWER!!!!!! Surprised Surprised Surprised

I obviously want to get another bridge rectifier that doesn't have a snapped terminal. Here are the questions.

REPLACEMENT PART:
Is there any reason to but the $16.95 item from Applied?
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/974

When I search for the # (KBPC3508) I find on much cheaper for $5.22...Are these the same?
http://www.alliedelec.com/hvca-kbpc3508/70016006/

THe "HowTo" on the gmcmotorhome.info references another # (KBPC3510) which is even cheaper for $3.84...Is this one ok?
http://www.alliedelec.com/hvca-kbpc3510/70016007/

TECHNIQUE:
Does anyone have any ideas how I can twist the terminals more accurately/safely so they line up the first time? I would prefer to not pull the existing white plastic housing...maybe make my own template?

QUANTITY:
How often do these things "burn out"? How many should I order?

Thanks,
--Bryan

Well, let's see ---- your motor home is about 40 years old. The quantity you order depends on how long you plan to live. If you feel that you are going to live another 80 years you might want to order two of them.

However if your replacement is a higher voltage rating than your original it should last even
longer.

I burned one out about 20 years ago. So I'm glad I didn't buy any spares.

The accepted wisdom is that they will burn out if you shut off the Onan while you have a load on it such as a running air conditioner.

I'm my case I installed an Onan switch by by dash so I can start the Onan while driving down the road. That way I can keep the air conditioner turned on and get cooling just by starting my Onan. I have done this many times but have not burned the bridge rectifier

Perhaps because I had installed a 1000 volt rated one when the original went bad.

I don't do this much anymore since I installed the aux. evaporator fort dash air.

So, I would suggest that you really don't have to carry a spare. They are easy to find at Radio Shack or other electronic parts shops if you are in a hurry.

You can buy the cheaper one with confidence.
FWIW, I have found pictures of a KBPC5010 on the net that shows the pins oriented the same as the OEM Onan socket. I have also found pictures of the KBPC5010 with the pins the same as everything else that doesn't fit. I don't know if the dimensions are correct even if the pin orientation is...
No idea for twisting the terminals more accurately.
The replacement part numbers have a higher current tolerance and don't burn out as often as OEM. If that helps your spare stock question.

Thanks Emery.

So if I can source one locally no need for spare. If I have to order them I will order an extra in case I butcher another one trying to twist terminals.

Congratulations on getting the Onan running! I was almost positive that
was what the problem was. Silver lining is that you got a nice Honda
generator as a bonus. :-) You can get a pretty penny for that if you
choose. Hope the drive back from Texas to Oregon wasn't too awfully hot.

btw, did you get the dash air working? I never heard.

They're cheap so get an extra or two. Go ahead and configure them for
installation.
You'll be able to help another GMCer one day and it'll make you both feel
good!

My four little jumper wires have been working for a few years now. I bought 4 or 5 because they were so cheap and promptly twisted off one of the terminals, just like you.

Thanks. The drive back was fantastic. As far as the dash air, the local shop in the Woodlands was trying to charge me too much for crappy reman parts. I ran out of time and had to leave. I will order up the right stuff and teach myself how to do A/C (with the help of you guys of course). Other than that the coach ran great and it was only truly uncomfortable when we we driving through 100+ degree temp from about 2-5 in the afternoon. It may have been an ill advised adventure to take a 40 year old vehicle cross country in the middle of August during a record setting heat wave...but life is short. The "on-the-job-training" I received was invaluable.

Larry,

How did you reinstall? Did you somehow figure out how to stuff the jumpers back into the plastic housing and remount with the screw? Did you dispose of the plastic housing and just remove the wires from plastic? Is the new rectifier just dangling in there?

Thanks,
--Bryan

You don't twist the terminals. You de-pin the plastic socket and drill out the terminal holder holes. You push the terminals on to the rectifier by slightly extending them through the old socket. The plastic part then serves to just keep things separated and safe and rectifier mounted.

I thought of something like that, but maybe using hot glue to re-orient the terminals in the holes in the socket.

I also tried to do an internet search for a socket that would work with the new pin orientation but no luck with that. Maybe the electronic professionals here know where to look.
