I am pulling out the Original Onan 6KW out of my Palm Beach I just bought. The PO explained that the Onan was finicky on start up...but once started it would run and produce good power. When I arrived to pick up the coach the Onan was indeed a bit finicky to start consistently. We did get it to run but to the PO's surprise it produced no power. I purchased anyway and after I pulled and cleaned the carb it seems to start and run consistently. I did destroy the old bowl gasket and I had to "make" a temporary. It leaks a bit of fuel and will need a real replacement seal.

Question:
How much is something like this worth? Is there a market?

I don't know about what it is worth. Onans seem to run for ever or can be fixed.

This may be a silly question, but did you try to reset the breaker at the top of the engine. It is a big single pole on mine. If it can be made to make power it might be great for years.

Check the circuit breaker. You already proved to yourself you can make it run. Before you go to all the trouble of removing and replacing it, run through the troubleshooting section of the Maintenance Manual. If it is shut down with the roof AC running, it kills the bridge rectifier. Quick, easy, and cheap fix to replace the bridge rectifier.

The modification to this one is to twist one or two of the connection leads 90 degrees.

We did make sure the circuit breaker at the top was reset and that seemed fine. I was told by other GMCers that the bridge rectifier was probably the culprit (based on the information provided) and that it was a relatively easy fix.

Here's the situation though...The PO included an older Honda EV6010 generator in the deal. I am going to get that one running and swap it into the coach.

So if it is the bridge rectifier and I can get the Onan making power...how much is it worth? anything?

In your position I would first try to replace the bridge rectifier before undertaking a replacement. A good running Onan is a good power plant.

Onan worth depends on how close you are to a GMCer who wants/needs one and how good they assess the condition.

Selling locally for use as a back up or other might bring $200-300.

Thank you sir.

I am going to order the new bridge rectifier on the Onan and see if that "fixes" the issue. If it does I will post either a working EV6010 or the Onan for sale and see what I get.

It is worth more if it produces power than one that doesn't.

Fix and keep the Onan. Sell the Honda, people will pay more for them. I am aware of no running 40 year old Honda gensets, you have a running 40 year old Onan and no resason to think it won't continue to do so. It's also less complex - you can fix it yourself.
