I saw a post saying GMC motorhomes are worth at least $6k no matter what. Wondering if you agree with this?
I would be interested in what the price range would be for a 23' one that is running and drivable, but needs air suspension repair (rear end sags when engine turned off), 2 windows replaced, interior carpet, counter tops replaced with odometer showing 50k. Where is the best place to buy/sell? Thanks.

Odometer reads 37K but probably 137K or 237K

Much more experienced members will chime in, but I will say no. They are worth much less than $6k on the low end. I got mine for $1000 then spent another $5500 getting it to the point where I can use it whenever I like. http://imgur.com/gallery/YFHhK
I may have gotten a good deal, and it might have been worth doing at a $2000 price point, but not much more. If I sold mine today with new tires and running great, I doubt I could realistically expect more than maybe $8k. Then again these are not exactly investments, so each person should set there own money to satisfaction ratio.

I think the real question is "What is the low end for one that runs and drives, but may have lots of other problems?" I submit that is something > 0.

______,
We have a very true standard line here.
A dependable and ready to coach will cost about 25K$ - All at once or as a kit.
First off, are you sure it is really 50K miles and not 150K?
The rear air problems are easy to fix, but maybe not cheap.
Windows are not expensive if you do them.
Counter tops are optional.
Year will make a lot of difference as 73&4 were GMC interior and later were someone else so both the interior fit and systems change.
What that most likely is is about a 6K coach. If you are buying, you need tires and wheels.

A friend recently bought a 26' 1973 coach for $100.
It had been parked for years. I helped him get it running and made sure it would STOP and run without overheating.
We added a battery, fuel filter, and replaced the fuel pump and used 3- 5 gallon gas cans to move it 100 miles from Trinity Center to Red Bluff early on Sunday, Mother's Day morning to avoid the Central Valley heat and traffic on the mountain roads.
It drove and ran surprisingly well for a coach that had been neglected for so long.

I came in with the idea of spending 13k
I bought one for 7,5k with very sound mechanics (so far 6k mls without a
real issue (knock on would)), bad looks inside and out. Doing the
renovation now. Material costs (plus labor for stuff I didn't do myself)
so far is an additional 5k so far, and will be another 1k-2k before
being complete. It will still be shabby on the outside, but the inside
will be clean and livable. Part of the 5k are tires, which I consider
more of an ongoing maintenance thing like oil. In the end, I will have a
coach that runs nice, won't have dash A/C, won't have a nice dash, but
will bring us from point A to point B, will give us a nice place to eat,
drink, sleep and wash in, and that's what we wanted.

Peer,
The 25K$ value includes some paid labor and actually, I think that value is currently understated.
Suppose you look at the number hours you have in this coach, now don't even put it in a dealership rate, that would be a shock.
Lest put it in a friendly local retiree shop rate - 25$/hr (yeah right).
That's too much. Let's pay Peer 5$/hr tax-free. Hang on, you just blew a couple of grand on beer.....
This is exactly what I have to watch out for when I am quoting a project for a long time client. These people don't grasp that since they retired, the cost of doing some things has honestly doubled.
But, then there is your satisfaction of knowing that the work you did was done right and will last.
Oh, and if part of you tire money was probably wheels, that was a good thing to do.

Matt,
> [..]That's too much. Let's pay Peer 5$/hr tax-free.
Shouldn't those hours be defined as leisure time, that you usually spend
in the bar, restaurant, movie, spending lots of USD?! So in this case,
working on the GMC is actually saving you money!!!

I passed on a "free" one 2 years ago. Inside gutted, tires very old, 16.5. 3-4 inches of pigeon crap on the top.
On blocks, not prepped for storage. Frame good, glass cloudy, Onan there, at least it was inside and no big critters
living in it. I bought a tractor once for $1500 and I figure I paid $3500 too much...

I never understood adding labor rates to something I do myself.
If I'm not fixing my GMC I might be watching TV or surfing the net, do I charge shop rates for that too?
My labor is free, no question.

Kieth,
That may be, but if the insurance company is going total it out, would you like them to say that the 1000's of hours you put into it were of no value??
That is the problem with sweat equity.

You will get a lot of inflated replies here based on owners who think their coach is truly special. Most of them are just short of junk. Look on the photo sight under the members name and see how pitiful some of those prized possessions truly are. They always brag about upgrades but in the end no one would be caught dead in them.

My labor is free, no question. You won't get anything from the insurance company unless you have agreed value. You can't get agreed value without an appraisal. Jim K does appraisals, and it has zero to do with how much or how little you paid for the labor or materials or anything. It is based solely on what it would cost to pay to restore your RV.
Your labor/time is free. If the work you put into your GMC is done grudgingly, calculate it any way you want. But unless you are foregoing a revenue generator to work on it, it is FREE.

Wow! You seem to be really negative. A GMC (or any vehicle, item, etc) is
worth exactly what someone else is willing to pay for it. Period.
