the GMC community
we have spent over 20 years and maybe 40 years
collecting links and data searches for GMC data
this email, is an example of how this how this hurts:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Jim Bounds did a great write-up on a primer switch for the Onan at the
remote start button location.
http://gmcmotorhome.info/onan.htm
http://www.gmccoop.com/onan_prime_circuit.htm
-- ------------------------------------------------
the first link works, the second does not !!!!!
-this is not "their" data it is "ours"
- this is how GMCMI stole 15 years of GMC data
- GMCMI only recently tried to give it back
- GMCMI is a fine organization, but the change was devastating
-
this is why I spend 3 hours a night fixing broken links
- this is why BDUB and the PHOTO SITE is our only hope
- send him $$$$ and hope he stays with us
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/
-
all of the old links to J. Bounds will no longer work
- THE DATA WILL STILL BE THERE
- but finding it will be a -PITA-
-
all of the stored links and references to JB are lost.......

everybody that setups a new web system is able to configure there server
to host the old content in parallel. Tell the web guy of Jim B to keep
the old information up in parallel. It should be easy peasy and won't
cost anything. But they have to be made aware of this.
I do here you with regards to broken links, and the work associated with
it. Most of the time, when I hit a broken link for a site (not only GMC
MH related), I just search on the destination site for the old
information, or hit http://archive.org and hope the Wayback Machine had
the site crawled.

Pretty strong words Eugene. Care to elaborate?

I am sure whoever is taking care of the Coop's website will find an easy
way to keep the old links going.
Don't bet on it!
Many of us non-tech savvy GMC'ers need SIMPLE access.

Being Tech illiterate is going to be almost as bad as being actually illiterate as the world moves on. People that rode horses were pushed out by those who drive cars. Spreadsheets replaced calculators. Word processors replaced typewriters. Smart phones basically replaced every consumer finished good at RadioShack. We all have to work to keep up, or we will have a small presence in the modern world. For many this is fine, but you simply aren't going to hold back the changes because you don't want them to happen.
Jim's new website is simple. Certainly more readable. It's just not what you are used to. New doesn't mean hard, but it can mean adjustment.

The co-op has a very checkered history regarding content maintenance over the last couple of years. I'm not overly optimistic that Jim will demand that the old links will be redirected or reestablished.

And let's be fair to Jim. This is not "OUR" content. It is Jim's intellectual capital....not ours. If he chooses to share it with us or not is his choice.
Posts here or on the photo site fall into a different category because it is a public forum. Generally speaking, in the intellectual property world, IP rights belong to the author unless they have waived them by assigning them to their employer or similar.
I'm not really sure who owns the content here. On my metal shaping site, we clearly spell out that the ownership of the content belongs to the author. They can edit and delete as they wish. Not all sites are like that. Some specifically say that if you post something, it becomes theirs.

I feel that any technical advice I give out freely is just that. FREE.
Makes no difference if I do it on this gmcnet, or present it at a rally
somewhere. Or for that matter, in a face to face conversation or phone
call. Do with it what you will. Just give credit for the source and don't
claim it as yours. If someone keeps one of these coaches on the road with
info gleaned from us, we all benefit from it. Intellectual properties?
That's kinda like "military intelligence" or "tactical options". Oxymoron
like in fact.

I think that it is absolutely wonderful that he does this.
Does Jim welcome visitors?

Producing content is absolutely the hardest part. The grind is horrific. The format is the least of it. Though I like other content management systems, I recommended wordpress because I think it will be around for a long time and maybe Jim won't have to face a migration issue for a while.

I don' need no stinkin' computers! Don't know where I would be without
them. Order my parts from my phone, keep in touch with family and friends,
research specs on stuff, take pictures of stuff and send them to suppliers
whom I have on the phone, list goes on and on. I am one of the few members
of my family to still have a hard wired phone. Only keep it for the fiber
optic buried Internet access. Brave New World out there, either jump on
board, or stand bemused while it passes you by like an endless parade.
Don't need the latest and greatest stuff, just proven tech that works
reliably.

JP, I've been toying with the idea of setting up a GMC wiki that could consolidate information from various sites (with site owners' permission, of course). I know WordPress is very popular right now for content management and site design, but I'm wondering if MediaWiki (the software that Wikipedia runs on) would be better suited for GMC information search and retrieval.
