Left Tulsa moving yesterday through blistering temps, she ran like a champ,
made hotel reservations in Jackson Tennessee, about 10 miles from the hotel
she began to hesitate. was able to maintain 40 ish mph maybe 50 it was
11:00 at night so traffic was light. pulled in at the hotel.

this morning i woke up to take a look, she tries to start, i have gas..
just wont start. i Have a turbo city throttle body on her, the only code i
get is 12. it says no distributor (diagnostic testing) something like that.

any ideas?

Quick check, remove air cleaner, crank engine, observe injectors. If no
fuel sprays, you have no spark. Check for primary voltage at distributor
connector. If yes, check male connection entering distributor. If no, then
check fuses and relay. Could also be module, or coil.

Have a look at The Black List. Some folks in Germantown, and Brighton. There's way worse places to spend a day or three than Jackson. ((Guymon comes to mind)

I dunno jack about the turbo injection system.

GM code 12 is no crank signal or diag mode. That will cause a no run if no crank. Not sure on aftermarket if codes are the same. At least inspect the crank sensor for loose or interfering if in fact that uses one. Guessing, but a code 12 with no diag jumper in place is bad or are you in diag mode?

Next check for spark at the plugs. If none, pull the cap on the distributor
and check the center electrode and carefully check cap for cracks or carbon
tracking. If you have a spare module, change it out. If still no spark,
change out the coil.

And, if none of that works, check the coil at the bottom shaft of the distributor.

Borrow a carburetor to get you to your destination in GA. Fiddle with the fuel injection where and when you can.

Dave, have you checked the spray pattern of the injectors. Maybe one is stuck open?

Another possibility that I have seen causing similar symptoms is raw gas getting into the canister then being pulled into the tbi below the throttle plates causing an extreme rich condition. Temporarily disconnect the hose from the canister and plug the vacuum on the tbi to test theory.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Would be good to know if FP has gone way up for some reason.

Other than possible problem with an injectors, it seems like the problem is not efi related.

David, based on your troubleshooting, I'm leaning toward the distributor. It looks like you've changed everything but the pickup coil. Mine failed a couple weeks back and had the same symptoms, coughing, missing, lack of power.

You have to pull the distributor to change it but it's not difficult and well described in the shop manual. Be careful not to loose the little "Jesus clip" as Dick Paterson calls it. (Circlip)

Before you pull the distributor, mark where the rotor is pointing and when you put it back make sure the rotor is pointing to the same place. It usually takes me a few tries to get the gears lined up where the rotor points where I want it. Should fire right up but the timing may be off a tad.

What happens is the pickup coil is attached to the vacuum advance and the little wires bend constantly and can develop a break inside the insulation. According to Dick Paterson, you can sometimes put a meter across the two wires that come from the pickup coil and to the ignition module. It should read 800 ohms or so...at least mine does. If you wiggle the wires and the reading changes, that is a problem.

There's several of us in the Atlanta area. Get it home and we can likely give you a hand. I have commitments through Sunday night, and again on Wednesday, there's not time to get to where you are and back. If the mechanical pump is still on the engine, or even if you have to buy one and a carb, it's cheaper than a flatbed tow. Put a generic Quadrajet on, and a gas can on the floor in front of the passenger seat with a piece of fuel line to the engine pump. I came home from Louisvile this way last year. The Smoking Lamp is OUT for the duration.

David

I called around -- only other advice was to call the local OReillys auto parts - they do most of the commercial accounts in the Jackson area and may have a lead on a mechanic.
