I am thinking of putting a 3.21 final drive in the coach to replace the 3.07.
I was thinking of making a cradle to hold the FD that would set on a floor jack
to raise the unit and help position it to aid in bolting the unit up.
These things heavy and are not the easiest to position correctly.
Has anyone got any pictures of something that has been made to facilitate
the installation?
Just thought I would check with the GMC net and avoid reinventing the wheel.
thanks is advance

Larry,
:
To at least get the data dump started: I recently helped install the first
3.21 I've touched. For that operation, I made an adapter which worked well
for us. I don't have photos, and it was to go on the end of the engine
hoist under my service rack, not on a floor jack, so the description will
have to suffice: Make an angle iron bracket with holes for a couple of the
the driver's side axle flange bolts in one leg of the angle iron, with the
FD resting inside the angle. On the other leg of the angle iron, weld a
guide pin to fit into the socket at the top of the floor jack. With the
pin in the socket and the FD set above there, secured with the axle bolts,
the FD can be jacked into place. Leave room for it to tilt fore and aft
about the axle flange.
We found it necessary to remove the FD cover to have room to maneuver it
into place on the transmission.
With the FD nearly in place, you may have to temporarily install the stub
shaft (beneath the oil pan) to act as a tool for rotating the input pinon
gear so as to align the FD and transmission.
