Hi All - we recently returned from a three week driving tour of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. We met friends there and used their car. Is there navigation equipment, that I could have used to save the route(s) of our travels? Despite notes, receipts, photos, etc., there are some areas that I can not recall how we got there or returned. In hindsight, it would have been to download our travels daily and put them on a basic map when we got home.
All input will be helpful.

Thanks

There are hardware GPS tracking loggers and also Apps for smartphones. Google GPS tracking loggers.

The Apps are cheap, but you may get a big Cellular Data bill for using it. Hardware based units cost more, but just download to your computer with WiFi or USB.

I was going to suggest just that: Call the NSA, and ask for your

GPS tracking itself has no requirement for a data connection. If you require live maps or routing - then either a data connection or data caching would be required.

On iOS - I use MotionX for tracking purposes. I've not found an Android app that I like as much.

Buy a prepaid cellphone, take the battery out when you aren't talking on it, and pay cash for your purchases. They have you when you use the phone, but they gotta infer the route between uses. Les,

This afternoon while I was waiting for Ada to finish some shopping, I was
messing with my Garmin RV760 and noticed that it has a tracking option that
shows were IT has been by date and gives distances. I never not noticed this
before. Is this what you are looking for?

Hi - it is. We have an older Magellan Roadmate 5045T-EU. I will look closer at it and maybe it has a similar function. I am not ready to buy a new unit just for that function. I am considering trying the MotionX app for our Iphone.

Thanks

Make sure you never have the prepaid phone on when you have your real phone on, or they will correlate the two and then can track you via the prepaid

Les,

This is a question I seem to answer sort of often. I may just be that people expect me to know when the see the name tag that says "Navigator". It also might be that more than a few people know that when we are underway, we often have 3 GPS running. (I can explain that if anybody actually cares.)

Unfortunately, the answer to your question is completely device dependent. Many GPS units have the capability to export the "track data" (<= that is what you are looking for). This often requires a serial or USB port and an a computer application. Many have the capability (recently) to store the day's track to an SD (or micro), but that still usually requires something to read the SD. Fortunately, most recent GPS can store in an ADM or a GPX format. GPX can be directly input to Google Earth complete with time data so you can re-watch the days movement. The other computer applications are free or cheap.

If you have an Android phone with GPS (not all do and the geolocation on my current and very temporary phone is not very good) there is an app called "my tracks" (Google - Free) that will record as long as you let it. The data can be ported out with relative ease. I do not know if there is an equivalent for iOS. This is what I use to store my deductible mileage for records. It would work for anything.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I have been otherwise occupied recently.

Matt and other GPS NAV aficionados,

Do any or all newer higher end GPS systems have the capability to generate
a map and show your placement on it if you are say waaaaay off the beaten
path on dirt roads that run for miles in various directions allowing you to
navigate as if you are looking at a printed map? In other words, can the
new nav units work with say Google earth or such? I love the restaurant and
gas station location features but I really need one that will let me take a
dirt or gravel road for 100 miles or so if needed to shortcut.

Todd,

I'm certainly not an expert on GPS's, especially the stand-alones (got a
new Magellan I don't understand at all!). But, it sounds like what you
need is DeLorme's Street Atlas on a laptop. You can display a map MUCH
better than on any GPS I've seen, including routes from start to finish
with cursor zoom. In addition to Street Atlas they also sell Topo maps
which should fit right into your off-road interests. Their little USB GPS
receivers are practically free (really are during frequent sales) and work
very well in my considerable experience with them.

Sully,

Ken beat me to the best answer.

Most of the high end unit - in fact most of Garmins - have complete USA maps on board. The problem is that you are only capable of seeing a little bit at a time and trying to ask it where it is routing you is often frustrating. While the detail on these charts (maps) is pretty good, it is often incomplete or out of date.
That is something that they all suffer with. They all also show roads that are platted only. This means that while the road exists on paper, it my be impassible to normal vehicles.

The nice thing about Street Atlas is that it is very easy to tell it start from where I am make a route to here. Then you can step along the route in detail and see if there are parts you don't like.

Street Atlas is a very powerful package. It can work in PHD (Push Here Dumby) mode, but it really shines when it tells you when to look for an overnight stop and where you should start hunting for fuel. You can even cross off roads you don't want to try.

Thanks guys, I will give that a look. The Boy and I embarked on a "short
cut" on our way back Northwest from a race in Jericho Ut and ended up on
the Pony Express trail after we ran out of asphalt and I did not feel like
doubling back. We had plenty of fuel to short cut below Salt Lake City but
got disoriented on the maze of dirt roads. I'm sure with a map we could
have pulled it off but we had none and cell phone no help. We ended up
doing a large scenic loop which was pretty cool but would've been cooler if
it had not cost us two hours.
