Uconnect, the Internet-connected software installed in newer Fiat Chrysler models, can be hacked remotely due to a vulnerability in its cellular capabilities.
"From 10 miles away, Miller and Valasek proceeded to hack into his car's software, toggling the windshield wipers, blasting the radio, and, eventually, cutting the transmission. Later, the hackers also managed to take over the brakes and sent the Jeep into a ditch."
Yet another reason to keep a GMC around.

As long as it has no connection to the outside world, you ought to be OK. Someone would have to do as the guys in the article did a couple of years ago - get to the OBD connector to hack the system. Got bluetooth or wi-fi in it, it's vulnerable. Want something without software or (flashable) firmware in it at all? Welcome to the GMC motorhome. The computer in my coach resides in a laptop satchel beside the passenger seat. Even the old analog OnStar could unlock the doors via celphone.

I can (and have) demonstrate,I can stop it quicker than the anti-lock system. However, I >knew< I was gonna panic stop it. In the real world day to day, the anti-lock has saved my rides more than twice in Atlanta traffic.

I, and most of you, carry an internet-connected supercomputer in our shirt pockets. I cannot fathom the idea that I might want Fiat (Fiat!! Based on my 70s-80s experiences, just the mention of that company gives me quality control chills. They make the Chinese look good by comparison.) or any other CAR company to provide me with their proprietary, dealer-serviced-at-a-premium crap.

The car companies have lots of really smart folks who will safeguard the systems.
The code will be re-written with the necessary safeties that were not part of the original design.
In the 70’s I remember all the “junk” comments about Aluminum engine blocks with steel sleeves.
It’s now accepted practice.
Things get better all the time. I for one like plugging into the computer on my car, and letting it tell me that there is an injector induced miss on cylinder 3.
They will get it right. The bugs will be squashed.
Now, about that Microsoft car rebooting at the intersection……

Quote:"Those experts don't live in Detroit," said Shawn Slusser, vice president of the automotive business at Infineon.
Even if they were on hand, those engineers would need time to examine and re-draw the network architectures of their cars and bolster the security for every electronic control unit on a vehicle. In the product-planning life-cycle, it could take three to five years for those alterations to reach new vehicles.

It was introduced to let you keep control over the car.

Exactly.
ABS was introduced to keep wheels from locking up - a wheel that is locked up can't change the direction of the vehicle. A wheel needs to be rotating in order to steer.

Wireless security is near impossible. There are just too many attack vectors that can be compromised from too many places.
I just heard about a way to lock and steal a car by eavesdropping on the key fob transmission and then replaying it verbatim.
They can, and did, unlock the car, start it and drive it away.
The only fix is to keep your car in locked storage.

It was a planned hack, the driver knew about it.
