My take is that these older forum postings software offerings are clumsy and awkward when it comes to things like forcing the participants to use plane text instead of rich text in their email clients, posting photos off line to a separate photo library and then referencing back to the text, etc. Facebook is a convenient way to post pics and URLs in-line so it is faster and easier to make an off hand comment about something. A bit like those who prefer one line text messages to a phone call or who think they are conveying information via a tweet or some such. If one likes it short, sweet and with pics then these social media venues make sense as long as one is willing to vet the factual nature of the few word “communications”. Email, phone discussions and these old forum type postings make sense if a more protracted dialog is required or preferred, but they do sometimes lead to endless postings and speculations that the social media does not promote.

I wonder what would happen if someone offered a much more contemporary forum like structure with much easier to embed in-line pics and URLs? Guess we will never know since such reinvention seldom leads from the college dorm room to membership in the zillion dollar club.

This topic was beat into submission a few weeks ago. I am in agreement with you about not using Facebook but a lot of people do like it. We seemed to
come to the consensus that the GMCnet was better for technical information and Facebook was good for social interaction. They both have their place
though and we all need to get along. The past discussions caused some hard feelings. Keep contributing to the GMCnet and I'm sure it will survive.

Why do so many mail lists take plain text (Courier Font/ASCII) posts and convert them to some rich text format such as the justified font on this GMC list?

IMO Facebook is great for socializing but its no substitute for a forum like this when you want to research a problem.

you gain short term ease of use but lose long term real functionality.
