I’m in the final stretch of the Howell installation. All that is left is to install the knock sensor, the computer controlled distributor, and the air cleaner. The knock sensor is making me crazy. Where does that beggar go? I anticipated installing it on the back of the passenger side head, but those threads are too small for the sensor. The threads are 3/8 - 16 and the sensor is 1/2 - pipe thread (I think).
I was certain I read somebody’s installation where they put the knock sensor on the back of the head, but it must have been a different sensor.
Any help?

I would suggest starting with it in the water jacket. There is a plug on the lower right of the engine - just above the half axle. If you have a cold engine and are quick, you can remove the plug and put the KS in without losing too much coolant. Others have felt that this location is too sensitive and have put the KS in the front motor mount. I believe they drill and tap for it - I've never done that so others will have to comment.
There was some discussion of this on the EFI Forum: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmcmh-efi/4LtNcEVt3QM

Randy,
I looked at that bung but it looked too small. Could it be 1/2”? If that’s the case then that’s what I’ll do; drilling and tapping are beyond my pay grade, though I’ve done it once (the return fuel fitting!)
I’ll check out the EFI list too.
Thanks,

Mine went in where Randy's did. The hole is bigger than it looks with the

Gene,
Yes, thanks for the link. I have been searching for the picture of the dash cover cut out. It is the photo right after the knock sensor. My dash cover will get modified this weekend.

I also have never done this is but the previous posting is the same recommendation I have heard from others who have. The back of the head is supposedly too noisy, picking up noise from the valve train. The motor mount is supposed to be a much quieter location.

Ken,
My preference would be to use the back of the head. It’s easily accessible and within reach of the wiring. However the threads are only 3/8" and the knock sensor (at least the one I have) has 1/2” threads. When I crawled under the coach to install the sensor in the water bung it looked like 3/8” to me, but I’m not certain. That’s were I’ll try to put it today.
