Mine is also bad.
Does it really do anything? Or just remove even more road feel?
If it makes the coach drive better I'm interested

Do any of you have the GMCMI Parts Interchange book? If you did you would have a great piece of information in your hands and is worth the price of admission when you join GMCMI.
The Moog part# SSD-55 is the standard replacement and a direct fit.

I've had a worn steering damper, a new steering damper, and no steering damper. Personally I prefer no steering damper and have been driving the GMC this way for a few years now. In my opinion a working damper just makes the steering feel 'numb', some people may like it that way but I don't. With no damper there is actually some 'road feel' that comes through the steering wheel -- not much but noticeably more than with.

Bill,
GMCMI is a great organization, I have been a member since 1998 and have enjoyed a good number of the conventions. If you find yourself close to a convention I recommend going and have a great time.

I did it the easy way and called Jim K. The one he sent me was a Delco, probably available most anywhere.

New they give it that new car feel. The road dirt on the chrome rod kills the seals so they don't survive very long. Also had one not leak but fail internally as in unscrewed. It would move about 3/4 " with no resistance, then work. Do you need to disconnect one end to test for feel.

It's real purpose is to keep the pitman arm loads down. I would have a working unit in there personally.

So if you hit a pothole that jerks the steering wheel the steering damper absorbs some of the load that the Pittman arm and steering
box would see if it wasn't there?

Yup--Pitman arm loads are a major factor in all steering system designs.

Wow,
Thanks Bob,
I worked on ride and handling, but always thought that was a bandaid fix for a poor wheel-feel.
