Is there any advantage or disadvantage to an anti-drain back valve in an oil filter?

WIX 51258 has an anti-drain back valve

WIX 51049 does not have an anti-drain back valve

WIX 51049 is .84" higher than WIX 51258.

Other dimensions are the same. Both filter to 21 microns and both fit the 455 engine.

Tom,

Based on the experience of some GMC owners, there is probably no difference,
IF
you are running an Olds engine. However, with a Cadillac engine, you would
be
flirting with possible disaster. This is because of the three foot passage
between
the oil pump and the pick-up screen in the pan. If the Caddy drops it's
prime,
it may not be able to pick it up. While this may be of no interest to those
who
still have an Olds, there are many enlightened souls who have been
converted.

I think this goes back to the AC PF24 with anti drainback being for horizontal on Buick V8 and PF30 without anti drainback for Olds vertical. Therefore there are 2 Wix numbers to correspond. I only keep the PF24 type or equiv in stock to cover both types of engines. I have not seen and disadvantages to using the anti drainback type where not needed. Let me know if there is other reasoning proving this wrong.

Tom,

IIRC if you watch the oil pressure gage it begins to go up pretty quickly when you crank the engine over which would indicate to me
that there's no advantage.

HOWEVER????

Let's see what others say.

I bought a case of WIX 51049's and I sure hope I haven't shot myself in the oil filter! ;-)

You don't want to go the other way with a PF30 on a Buick. They knock for about 4 secs at start after sitting over night untill oil gets to where it belongs. The only advantage of the anti drainback I can think of on the MH is that the oil cooler is above the filter when it sits.

Thanks for the input. Apparently, either oil filter will work fine with a 455 engine. Since WIX 51049 is .84" higher than WIX 51258, it will hold a little more oil, maybe a very minimal advantage. Dick Patterson recommends 51258. I'm not sure why. Maybe someone knows. I use the 51258 and attach a magnetic ring on the outside of the filter to help catch steel debris.

Incidentally, that Jay Leno Hot Flush video makes me wonder how much trash an oil filter actually catches.

Given what I consider a lousy way to mount rocker arms, the need to suck oil three feet before blowing it through the engine and the problems some folks here have encountered, I think I'll forestall enlightenment for a while. I wouldn't necessarily pull a cad engine out if I ended up with something that already had it in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to put one in either.

Tom,

Dick likes the 51258 because it has the anti-drain back valve.

From where I sit the advantage to the 51049 is additional height which equals more media surface area.

Dick recommends the Filter Mag as well.

The Jay Leno video showed the Hot Flush cleaning a 40 year old oil cooler out of a Lotus. Contamination in the filter says to me
that:

1) the Lotus was plumbed the same way as our 445/403's (oil filter downstream of the oil cooler) so it collected contamination
before the oil was filter

2) the Lotus had a bypass built into the filter and the contamination went through the filter bypass

IIRC one of the guys noted that it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean an oil cooler regularly! I agree and am going to have the oil AND
transmission coolers in The Blue Streaks radiator cleaned by the shop that has a Hot Flusher here in Sydney. I will report what I
find. It may take some time before I get to that as I have LOTS of other irons in the fire.
