A lot of you know Richard and Jaye Hodges. They're long time GMC owners
and part of the setup crew for GMCMI rallies. They live on the opposite
side of the lake from Debbie and I. They've had their 1974 Eleganza
(Buckskin) for at least 18 years that I know of and have put well over
200,000 miles on it. Richard has bought a couple other GMCs over the years
but always falls back on dependable ol' "Buckskin". They've got a '78
Royale that they tried to drive to the spring GMCMI rally at Patterson, but
blew the engine a hundred miles from home. Limped back home, loaded up
Buckskin, and took up where they left off. He's been just that dependable
through the years. The Royale is not quite ready for prime time and they
really needed to get on the way on their annual sojourn to Minnesota so
they were going to fall back on ol' Buckskin one last time.

Well, we had a pretty extreme lightning storm last Friday night and they
had a really close strike near their home. Richard looked out the back
door to check on Buckskin and all appeared fine through the driving rain.
Sunday he went out to start getting ready for their trip. Upon opening the
door, he discovered that the lightning had taken a toll after all. The
interior of Buckskin is totally burned out. Headliner down, carpet gone,
front interior cap sagging, holes in the closet and bathroom walls, just
heartbreaking! But, the frig was still keeping cokes cold running off
propane and 12V! Think about that!

He said it looks normal from the outside. Glass and exterior is all fine.
I haven't seen it yet but just can't imagine that. It must have used up
most of the oxygen and just smoldered inconspicuously until it burned
itself out. The new tires and Alcoa wheels are fine. The frig is
obviously fine except for probably the door covering. He hasn't tried it
yet but there doesn't seem to be any reason it won't start and run fine.
Insurance adjuster has looked at it. Haven't heard back yet. I'll try to
get some pictures of it tomorrow evening when I'll have time to get over
there.

Oh wow! How bizarre. Hopefully the mechanicals are all fine and they can just have the interior redone and be back on the old horse.

How sad! I hope they had good insurance coverage.

I guess the Royale will be getting Buckskin's running gear now, huh?

Some pictures have been posted on the Classis mail list.

I suspect the coach was plugged in to shore power. It appears that the fire started in the area of the AC power panel and spread from there.

Billy,

Hoolee Doolee! Talk about a FREAK occurrence!

I'm sorry for what happened to Buckskin but overjoyed that neither Richard nor Jaye were in the coach when lightning struck, God
only knows what could have happened to them!

My GUESS is that the lightning did not actually strike the coach, but came in on the shore power AC lines. Either way, I doubt that Richard or Jaye would have been injured unless they were holding on to some electrical device at the time of the strike.

Mac,

Assuming that the shore power to the GMC came from their house wouldn't it have wreaked havoc in the house circuitry as well?

Definitely a possibility, Rob. However, we have not heard any further description of the strike. Right now, it is all speculation (i.e., anybody's guess) until further info comes out!

Fifty + years of messing with electronic things which are attached to very tall metal structures tells me lightning does freaky things. What it doesn't do is go inside a conducting closed structure (remember your high school physics lab with the funnel, thread, and van de graf generator)... it travels on the outside. However, once it gets in the power feed, you have a potential fiasco. Run a wire down a tower, and a strike will induce a hell of a spike in the wire. Roy B. Carpenter kind of 'wrote the book' on keeping damage out of electrics when things like towers or power lines get hit, read up or read his papers. I've spent a lot of $ on LEA equipment, all of it was in the long run a bargain. Probably the best cheap and dirty approach to a GMC would be a coil of four or five loops of the incoming power cable, and commercial supressors in the power panel.
