It has been mentioned that there are several iterations of the A 6 A/C compressor, of different capacities. If this is correct, how can I determine what the capacity of one actually is? I can get a rebuild for about $110, which is worth a chance on the rebuilder. But, I'd like to get the highest capacity unit made if there are several.

Johnny,
The A-6 compressor capacity is only one size:
"The A-6 was Frigidaire's first axial designed compressor. This compressor used a cast-iron cylinder and heads with a steel case and "swash" plate. The A-6 designation related to its axial design and the fact that it was a 6-cylinder compressor unit. The interior of the compressor also had an oil pickup and sump system to lubricate the internal parts. The A-6 compressor will push out 27,000 BTUs at 2,000 rpm and as high as 42,000 BTUs at 4,000 rpm with a discharge rate of 240 p.s.i. That's enough cold air to cool a small house (most home window-mounted air conditioners are only rated from 5,000 to 12,000 BTUs). The compressor functions much in the same way an engine does but without the ignition and combustion strokes. An A-6 is rated at 1.5-inch bore with a 1.2-inch stroke and 207cc displacement. That's about 121/2 cubic inches. The A-6 is also highly adaptable. It can run in 6, 12 or 24-volt systems if you install the proper clutch coil. They are a pretty resilient unit too; they can turn consistently at 6,500 rpm all day without overheating, and you can turn them in either direction and they will function in the same way. Originally designed to be used with R-12 Freon, modern adapter kits allow the A-6 to run on the newer, more environmentally friendly R-134a.”
But it is very versatile with a number of back plates for use on many vehicles. Primarily used on GM vehicles from 1962-’85 and other cars from 1971 and up. Anyone used on a GM vehicles are the same with both hoses attached to the back of the compressor by way of just one fitting. Here is a list of possible donor vehicles:
1962-'84 Buick and (and 1985 Buick diesels)
1962-'79 Cadillac and Oldsmobile
1962-'81 Chevrolet (cars) and Pontiac
1962-’85 Chevrolet and GMC trucks
Other manufacturers:
1972-'80 Ford
1971-'80 Lincoln
1974-'80 Mercury
1972-'85 Jaguar XJ6 and XJS
1978-'86 Audi 5000
1966-'85 Mercedes
1972-'82 Volvo
I bought my last A6 a couple of years ago from Advance Auto and it was a rebuild from Harrison Four Seasons which built the originals for GM.

And you can also buy NEW units, but you will be paying a high premium for those in the $300 to $400+ range. You can also update to the Sanden style compressors that work very well also but can be pricey from some of the aftermarket suppliers. This one from Jim K is a very price for a direct replacement.

Thanks. I was misinformed about capacity, probably someone saw the ratings at different speeds. Essentially, I will have a 30K BTU system if/when I add an aux evaporator. $139.99, less 20% is AutoZone's delivered to the door price. I think I'll go for it.

So 3.5 Tons at a good clip. I don't think our condenser can support 3.5 Tons if I had to guess. Maybe when the fan is locked up .

The A-6 compressor capacity is only one size:
Generally this is true EXCEPT Corvettes had a reduced capacity A-6.

How do you get to the "less 20%" part?

I got a mailer from AutoZone with a less 20 code 20HOT10, I think it was. Good for a couple of days, it's probably expired now.

Chris,
When I did refrigeration (by command of my employer) is was introduced to 1 ton = 1 HP of compressor and that was pretty much true across 12, 22 and 502. I would guess it is still pretty close.
