Good evening all
I borrowed a friends jeep over the week end with a push button engine
starter. You have a proximity fob you keep in your pocket and just need
to be close with it and push button to start engine. Has anyone tried
this and if so how does it work. If it works well were does one buy the
kit to convert from the key in ignition to the keyless starter

Former boss used to have them installed in his Mercedes rides aftermarket, 30 years ago. Not quite the same as the proximity ones now, more like the unlock key fobs but they would start the car. An auto sound outfit did the installs, ask at one of them what's available aftermarket.

One problem is that our key system locks the steering. That would have to be disabled as well or leave the key in it all the time.
When the rack and pinion gizmo in the steering column broke in our coach, the key spun in the lock but the starter would not engage. Ignition would not turn on. I ended finishing our trip with a coat hanger to work the ignition I still needed the key to unlock steering.
When it first happened the shifter would not move out of park. Because mine is still broken I don't know if that is part of the system or if broken parts were clogging the shifter. I finally gave a mighty pull. Broken pieces rained down and the shifter would then move without the key.
I have an old gun cleaning rod beside the steering column to run the ignition. I started to try to fix the broken parts but the steering column was not designed with the guy who had to work on it in mind.

I am looking into a simple start button instead of the regular key
usage. Seems to be a safer way to start the engine, no chance of
destroying the lock/starter mechanism that way. I still haven't decided
upon how to do it though.

remote car starters are very common here in MN. I have installed them on numerous cars over the years.
you can start the car remote, let it warm up in the winter, or have the A/C run in the summer. our current one that is installed on our honda Pilot, will start the car from 2000 feet away. It uses radio. the devices It safeguards someone stealing the car, by still having steering wheel locked, and it shuts down, if you hit the brake before turning the key to the on position.
They are primarily meant for fuel injected vehicles, and not carb vehicles. There is no good way to set them up to set the choke, or depress the accelerator. If you have Fuel injection in your GMC, it would be a very easy thing to add. I would still think you need to insert the key and turn it on, to release the steering wheel lock.
as far as where to buy them, there are places in MN all over. I would only buy a compustar brand right now, you also have to get one that has a good fob, that the buttons do not get pressed when it is in your pocket. I prefer to hunt down a remote starter, that has the least options. Astro-start used to have a nice 1 button starter. Astrostart quality went downhill though since.
there is all sorts of brands, and price points. You hear of plenty of stories of cars burning down from improper installation, or some china junk car starter. I have not been installing them myself lately, because each newer car, seems to get more advance with their electronics, and too much trouble or liability. You can usually find a remote start as a factory option too. It is one item, My wife does require in her vehicle.
