The FMCA northwest regional rally at Coos Bay, OR, is winding down today. Nothing major to report. Is rally was light on vendors, just the normal group of magic elixirs (always my favorite just to watch the pitch), a couple of LED guys, lots of RV places and tours, and a hand full of big coach repair stuff. The display coaches included a reasonable representation of new big coach makers, a number of used large coaches but very few new or used small coaches, and none of the small coaches built on the FWD Fiat chassis. Prices continue to rise with gas coaches now entering $200,000 territory and diesel pushers settling into three brackets - $300k entry level, $500k mid level and $700k upper end. It is really hard for me to see why people are buying these new coaches when a few year old formerly good name coaches are selling for half or less from those prices. The coaches themselves and the included systems have changed very little and most of the used ones have seen fewer
than 10k miles per year.

There are some people who simply have so much money the cost of things is largely irrelevent. Must be nice.

I remember when my mum bought a 1996 Chrysler Voyager, the european counterpart to the Dodge Caravan.
Yes, she actually had to wait for the Eurostar factory in Graz, Austria to re-tool, so we skipped vacation for 3 months since we wanted to go to France with our new car.
To France, we went - with our brand-spanking new Minivan. It had the new Minivan smell to it, very similar to that new coach smell you mentioned.
It was intense. It made me puke.
That smell covered the other.
It was actually the last car my mum bought new. Mostly for financial reasons.
No place else has that high depreciation on automobiles like Switzerland. The LE trim Minivan was about 65'000 $, and a 5 year old one is below 25'000. Assuming a 1=1 exchange rate which was and still is reasonable.
A 5-year-old one was what she bought after that. By that time the odor had passed.

Domonik -
$65k is out of line for a '96 Caravan unless there's a hell of a tariff. Even the Diesel version (not sold here) shouldn't go that high. I picked up a 2011 Town and Country last year for a bit less than 20K, in top condition and low mileage. Sticker on it was 39 thousand and a bit new. So, in 3 years, depreciated about 50 percent from original (although there's no way to tell what the first owner actually paid for it).
The retail price new on a '96 Grand Caravan top of the line trim was just under $25K.
As to the smell, J.C. Whitney used to sell aerosol spray cans of 'new car smell' which was fairly accurate.

Johnny,

I think, the 65k was the sticker price when new.

I believe Denmark has a 180% excise tax on new vehicles. I think my friends in Copenhagen said Switzerland had a helluva vehicle tax, too.

In the USA, the "Voyager" was the Plymouth (now discontinued brand name) version of the Dodge "Caravan" and Chrysler "Town and Country" vans. The chassis, engines, and transmissions of all three versions were virtually identical. The differences were basically in the level of the decorations!

If the vehicle was "branded" as Chrysler for sale in Europe and elsewhere, I suspect that would have been a marketing decision since the name Chrysler was most likely more well-known outside of North America.

Rob,

We here in SC use the term "stupid rich" to mean so rich you do stupid things with the money - like buy $800,000 coaches or trade in a car because the ashtray was full on the old one....

Common sense and thrift seem to abandon some people when they achieve a certain amount of security.

Oh to be so secure...

Joe,

I have also heard the saying; "he's got more money than sense."

As far as I'm concerned as long as people that have more money than I do have earned it fair and square (or inherited it) what they
do with it is up to them, they can burn it if they like and that's OK with me.

By the way I believe being "rich" is a relative term, I'll bet dollars to donuts that a homeless person probably views any of "us"
as "rich" because we own a GMC! ;-)

As I said, hell of a tariff or excise tax or whatever, the 25K I quoted was the sticker price new for a loaded '96.
A guy once told me the definition of 'rich'. It is the ability to walk up to anyone in the world anywhere, look him square in the eye and tell him, "F--- you!" and not give a damn what he might do about it. As he said, you're either real rich or real broke at that point to have the ability to do that.

I think Dominik was also talking new back in 1996, and in Switzerland, Swiss Francs being the currency. It Was about 1.4 CHF to 1 USD back then? Makes it about $45K. Probably about right for a loaded one in Switzerland, even then.

Regarding new coaches, We've been looking and cannot see paying $200K for new when a 2008 - 2010 can be had for less than $80K with 80K miles on them.

On the new coach smell, well it isn't so much the new coach smell being a draw, but the "old coach smell" being a deterrent. A lot of them seem to stink!

And then a lot of them have all that horrible bling like mirrored ceilings and wall panels and the like. What gives?
