I mentioned VBeltSupply.com in the past couple of days. I just got from
them a sale announcement: Use the code "BEFORE4" for a 10% discount. TIme
to get those spare wide-enough belts. :-)

Ken,

I have not (yet) had to change belts. However I have had to change alternators about 304 times. (Current one has about 2500 miles, a super record. Too bad I can't find a fan clutch with this longevity. And yes, I have tried every fan clutch mentioned here on the forum. The current one is takes first place as it has never engaged once, even when the temp was 230* F)

My problem is that every time I get an alternator, i have to remove the "stock" pulley and replace it with my larger pulley. If I did not there is no way the existing belt would tighten properly.

So my question is, what size sheave is "stock" for a 455? And yes I know you have a 500 Cad but I also know you know stuff.

George,

Before I get dressed & go to the shop to measure an old 455 alternator
pulley, let me ask a couple of questions:

1. If your "stock" pulley is larger, it's running the alternator slower
than those you replace -- don't you expect that to reduce the output of the
alternator?

2. Instead of continuing to replace pulleys, why don't you just get a
longer belt?

3. In view of 1., preceding, if you do 2., preceding, maybe you can reduce
that excessive longevity to near zero thanks to the higher alternator speed.

I'll try to send you a number after breakfast -- IF memory don't fail.

George,

Sorry, but I'm not much help: The only alternator I could find with a
V-belt pulley is of dubious ancestry; may be Cad or Olds. At any rate, its
OD is 2-5/8". Most pulleys around here are serpentine since that's all
I've run for 10 years or so.

Are you monitoring current flow? Something's not right for you to be going
through that many alternators; I haven't had a problem with one in many
years (if memory serves well).

Ken,

The pulley is larger, so going to a stock pulley the alternator would run slower. Not necessarily bad.

I watch the voltage. Each failure begins with voltage starting to jump around. I assume it is bad diodes. I tried Delco (remanufactured in MI) O'Reilly's. Auto Zone, a local shop and NAPA. Almost all had whiny bearings. The O'Reilly's is actually running the longest. It still has a bit of whine at 2400 RPMs. It is a higher amperage and the voltage rarely twitches. My coach is a '74 so it is that big Caddy rig.

Thanks for trying to help. I was hoping a standard belt with a stock pulley would solve the problem.
