Does anyone know how to remove the ball from the
socket in the base of the RAMCO Mirrors?

I have drilled out the set screws and need to clean out the threads
with a tap but can't get the tap completely into the base since the ball
is in the way.

It looks like there is a plastic clip that holds the ball in place
but I have had no luck getting it to come out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well, I figured it out.

The two plastic pieces that surround the ball will pop out if
you put a bit of penetrating oil on them and use a bit of brute force.

Anyway, got it out and the threads are tapped.

Larry,

The ball on the mirror sits in a split bushing that is tubular on the
outside
and round on the inside. That's the best way I can describe it. The
bushing
is, of course, held in by those set screws that seize in the housing.
The bushings are somewhat failure prone, at which point the mirror falls
off. BUT, Ramco will give you a set of aluminum bushings to replace them
at no charge. At least they did when my mirror fell off. Call them.
I drilled the set screws out completely, then tapped the bracket for
Heli-Coils.
I then put in new SS set screws with Neverseize on the threads. Hopefully,
this repair will take care of the problem forever. JWID

Gary,

I managed to drill out 3 of the screws ( 4th came out ) and re tap the threads.

I bought 1/2 inch set screws and plan to install with anti seize.

I'm glad you brought up the replacement aluminum bushings because one of
my plastic ones broke when it came out.

I am going to give RAMCO a call and order 4 for the mirrors.

Gary,

Well, I called RAMCO and they are going to send me 4 of the bushings
but I did have to pay for them plus shipping, $ 5.45 each, so about
$25 for all four.

Oh well, I guess it beats buying new mirrors @ $ 275 each.
