I'd like to hear from members of the community who have had hip replacement surgery, especially those who are "mechanically" active

Having worked in Ortho at the hospital I am familiar with the passible complications and activity restrictions such as crossing legs or sitting in a lotus position.

Before I decide to proceed Id like to know if it has interfered with your ability to work on your projects

Have had issues for years after breaking a hip in Jump school. Steroid injections for 3 years and arthroscopic surgery last march that actually made it worse. Been out of commission for a while now and was put in a desk job this week

I may not really have an option, just want to be informed up front.

PM me if you dont want to share publicly

Thanks

Chris,

I'm not a "hipster" but a 'kneester" (which is doing great - a little over six weeks after the operation I can walk up and down
stairs using the new knee.

Being the pedantic bastard that I am before the operation I spent HOURS on the internet researching it. I watched three or four
videos of the operation (bit gory for my taste) and LOTS of comments from people that have had it done and the one RESOUNDING theme
that echoed through ALL the responses was:

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE PHYSIO TERRORIST TO THE LETTER AND DEVOTE MAXIMUM EFFORT TO THEM!!!!

I had a total hip replacement 10 years ago this June. USMC Helicopter crash. Left leg eventually ground down enough bone to make it 1 1/2 " shorter.
Best thing ever. Check dr's record on redo's and hospital record on infections. Therapy for a hip is walking. I was out 3 months per dr orders.
I walk 2 miles a day and crawl over/under GMC with reckless abandon.

Chris,
I had a hip replaced 11 years ago, I had a ball and socket that never
formed properly. I never could sit crossed leg as my hip area was too
stiff. I just kneel down when working on axles. I did get a case of
housemaid's knee last year after working on all six wheels. It took a
couple of weeks for the swelling to go down so as I could kneel again.

I know 3 people who have had hip replacement surgery because of arthritis. Each of them would be wheelchair bound had it not been for the surgery.

I don’t know what the options are, but to a person, they all tried everything they could think of before succumbing to the surgery, and each of them regretted waiting so long. When it’s my turn I’m sure I’ll resist too - I’m not too bright sometimes…

I am an active 52 years old and had an anterior hip replacement last August due to hip dysplasia and a torn up labrum. Before the surgery, I was not able to walk much, little sleep, almost impossible to do the things I wanted. Now 10 months later, I can walk, run, jump, hike, bike, do aikido, sleep, sit and climb all over my coach with no issue. I was walking day of the surgery and back at work 2-weeks later. I used no pain meds post-surgery other than aspirin to help reduce blood clots. At my age there was much debate as to what to do as it was a little early for a THR but the end result has been very positive.
The best moment was going through an airport screening; I let them know beforehand that I had a metal hip on the left side. They said OK, step in and raise your arms. Alarms went off and I step out. I see on the monitor the highlighted area the machine was concerned about. The screener pulls out the trusty wand and waves it over my right hip and imagine that, everything is OK. I could not summon the enthusiasm to tell the screener he was checking the wrong hip. Oh well.

Gary,

My surgeon gave me a card with an X-ray of my knee replacement to hand to airport security personnel.
