I’m curious about how many of you have removed the rear facing seats and replaced it with a permanent bed?

Thanks!

I did not remove the seats but left them folded flat and had a mattress made that fits on top of them. It is a bit high when getting in and out of bed but manageable. 8 inch thick foam mattress.

So far we have kept the seats. But that conversation has come up between my wife and I. it is just so easy to be tossing our lawn chairs, bbq and other misc, crap between the seats on the floor when traveling. I have good spots for them usually, but if it rains when we pack up, I usually just toss the wet stuff from outside into that area. It is also easier to open up those back windows when driving.

the idea of being able to put a more comfortable bed back there is the main reason for wanting to remove them. That and more permanent storage space can be added under the bed. right now we either deal with the bumpy bed, or we inflate a full size air bed on it. The air bed is plenty comfortable, but need to keep adding air daily or every other day. I am looking at spending $100 on a 2" gel memory foam topper, and also thinking of just pulling the rear seats out and do a temp. permanent bed when we are going to be sleeping back there for a longer period. they are not that hard to remove.

The rear cushions were worn out when we got the coach and my bad back could not take sleeping on them. We always left it in the bed position so we removed the seating, built a platform and purchased a decent posture-pedic mattress to fit.

In the space between underneath, I built a box on rollers for tools and spares that can be pulled out for easy access. A cover trimmed in the coach upholstery is fitted across when the box is stored.

We have not and there are some a reasons.
First is that the water pump is under there and when it requires attention, it is more pleasant to do it from the top.
Second is the door for the APU battery that later coaches and 26s don't have.

When we got our 73-23 we were younger, and capable of sleeping on the folded open seats.

Then we got a tuffed air mattress that lasted a season before it developed a patch proof leak. We got another that was conventional parallel tube constriction. We still have it, but the large tubes at the edges caused us to roll together. While that was not all that undesirable sometimes, on hot nights, it just didn't work out well.

While on an excursion, Mary when into a mattress store and got measurements for a fulton folding mattress. It is about a perfect fit. It can be folded and carried out to the dinette when I have to do things at the potable tank and pump.

I have an Eleganza II which has a couch, dinette and rear facing seats. I converted to a rear bed. If I had it to do over, I would leave the rear seats and convert the couch and dinette to two single beds. The rear bed is nice for storage underneath but having to crawl over each other to get in and out is a pain. If I ever finish all my other projects, I may convert it to just such an arrangement.

My PO converted the rear dinette to a much more useful (IMHO) storage and hinged bed platform. There's a huge pull-out drawer that extends 4' or so down the hallway when it's deployed, and the bed swings up high enough that it's really not a big deal getting to the electrical and water system equipment mounted under it. The PO had a custom mattress made that's 52" x 84". Yes, it does require crawling over the wife if I have to get up, but I never mind that (for all the wrong reasons). Wink

I still have my fold out seats back there. I store a lot of stuff back there that I usually unload when I set up camp. When I do make it back that far to sleep, I find the fold down seats just fine for flatness. Many times I just crash on the front couch watching TV

my 26 has a queen in the rear to one side with a hinged base for access underneath. There is a counter with sink and drawers under the window on the other side. My 23 had worn out cushions in the rear seats so I folded them flat an put in a memory foam mattress, never used the rear seats and table. the 23 also has the pull down bunk bed in the rear so sitting at the rear table would be cramped.

When we were using "Old Trusty", the 77 Kingsley, my wife loved to set back there, with the great views, and read. We slept in front with two facing couches.

Hi, Dolph
A standard mattress, either conventional or foam should fit. Our Eleganza
bed area is about 53 1/2 x 74 1/2, and our foam came in 4 X 30" X 72"
pieces. so we did a little piecing to fill up the space.
One layer dense foam for the bottom layer, 1 layer soft foam for the top.
Available during the camping season from Kroger, Fred Meyer, and similar
stores, between $15 & $20 for each slab. Sometimes stores have 3", some
have 4" thick slabs. Glue together if desired.
(http://www.foambymail.com/GLUE.html for gluing instructions). Ours are
not glued, but I keep wishing I had glued them. If I had glued them, I
might be wishing I hadn't. I definitely would have either glued the
narrow filler pcs at the end of the main slab, or not used them at all.
Use an electric knife to slice to desired dimensions. You can glue just
the pieces for each layer together, or glue the whole thing up like a
mattress. Use with or without a memory foam topper. We didn't use the
memory foam in our first coach, as it wasn't available yet. Second coach
got the memory foam on top of the seats, then when we removed the seats,
on top of the foam. I don't think the it sleeps any better with the
memory foam than without. The whole foam pad is lighter than just the 2"
memory foam topper, and easier to move around. Some folks build a
tiltable platform for easy access to the space under the bed, and for
easier access to the water tank and pump on certain models.

Our seats were gone when we bought the coach. It is only the two of us, and we rarely sleep back there. The bed that was there was not very comfy. So it is gone now, and the area has become storage for toolboxes, grill, hoses, lawn chairs, etc.

Sometime I wish the seats were there (especially when you have a scenic camping spot that backs up to a lake or something). But then what to do with all the "stuff"?

It is just two of us, so we usually sleep up front.
