The Final Drive is back in place and the short shaft all buttoned up. For all my procrastinating this turned out as not too bad a job.

Manny had suggested guide bolts. I used three from a steering wheel puller from HF. They were chrome and made things slide well. As I said before it slid back easily, supported gently with my floor jack.

Today I worked the gasket in place in stages. First I made sure the FD was not going to tip back. It was resting against the tie rod, nicely. (You can tell I don't take my rig in for a steam cleaning!)

I took the top guide bolt out and slipped the gasket down, working it past the FD inner collar, hanging it on the bolt. It had to be bent a bit because it rested on the two bottom guide bolts.

Here is a picture of the two bottom guide bolts with the gasket resting on them. No real stress on the gasket.

Working underneath I took one bolt out at a time and slipped the gasket onto the guide bolt. Note the bottom guide bolts are key to the success of this project. All three guide bolts could be removed easily, showing the FD was not going to flop around.

Once the gasket was fitted around the FD inner collar I gave a light push on the jack and it slid to about 1/2" of being in place. It seemed closer at the bottom than the top so I gave the jack a tiny pump. I must have turned the right wheel leaning over it to work on the top... and take pictures. I moved the wheel a bit and the FD slid home easily. I put in one stock bolt to keep it home and took out the guide bolts one at a time, replacing them with stock bolts.

Easy for a 150 lb. weakling working by himself. No wrestling that FD... and they are heavy! Thanks to Manny for suggesting the guide bolts. Note that I also gently supported the FD with a floor jack so it was not hanging totally on bolts in an aluminum case.

Someone will probably wonder, why did he not put the bottom bolts at each corner. Looking at the pictures I was a bit puzzled myself and then I remembered... lazy. Of course! I would have had to crawl out and around the jack and back in again.

I even surprise myself with my corner cutting sometimes. (Pun Intended)
