Big progress, today. Got the half shaft out of the final drive. Turned the steering to the right. Put three 3" bolts in place of the FD bolts to the transmission; tow at the bottom and one at the top. I put my jack under it, and slid the FD back about 2" until it hit the tie rod.
I eagerly looked for the errant gear and pin on the bottom of the governor. Ahh, no wonder the governor wouldn't come out. The pin was sticking out about 1/2", in fact it couldn't have been hanging on by much. You can see the pin sticking out right below the female spline on the transmission. I was able to weasel in there with some lineman's pliers and work it out. I poked at the gear with a piece of wire until it fell out.
The smart guys call it "staking" the pin in, meaning take a modified chisel and bugger the ends of the hole the pin goes in so it can't come out. The PO made a weak attempt at staking the pin. I can see the marks but they are not much and the pin slid out. (I wonder if the roll pin is the right size?) A three second per side faulty bit of work with a chisel caused several hours of work. Not to mention driving 90 miles in low gear. Get 'em staked in well, when replacing a gear.
My my, the governor comes out very easily when there is not a roll pin hitting the case.
Speaking of roll pin hitting the case, if the pin is sticking out the governor can't spin. The gear made a mighty effort but no deal.
The three guide bolts worked like a charm. Remember, the jack it supporting the weight, but I have not moved the left wheel. When I was shutting the barn door the jack handle was sticking out a tiny bit. I gave a light push and the final drive slipped back into place. No lifting, no aligning. Manny taught me that.
Manny said the governor probably is damaged. (Four eager GMCers following the advice of many attempting to get the governor out. Just twist and pull and it should come right out.) I ordered one of Wally Anderson's rebuilt governors from JimK. I am betting Wally got the pin staked in properly.

Hi George,
What a job! I didn't check with the schedule you put out several days ago to see if you were following it. Seems like you are moving a bit faster.
I always thought that the purpose of a roll pin was to avoid staking. Roll pins are held in by friction. It makes me wonder if it's the right size, or something else is wrong. Probably a good idea to order a new governor.

I agree with the thought that a roll pin is designed to hold itself in place, providing the hole is the correct size (not wore out by ?)'
Reusing the roll pin is not a good idea, it may have lost some of the spring tension.
If the staking is too good, then it becomes a hard field job to replace the gear. And of coarse, if it slides out it's impossible.
Is there a photo of how to stake, or what it should look like when done properly?

Wally Anderson's site (search Wally & Sue GMC. He shows a modified tool and the stake.
I agree with roll pin discussion. By nature they are spring steel and should be way too tight to slip out. I am wondering if the hole was reamed a bit due to using it as a guide to drill new gears. That and then heat expanding the hole could make it loose. I was puttering along when this happened, so I don't think there was any undue force.
