Thanks for the input. You are thinking the same way as I am. Let's drop pan and look at bearings. Top end appears good and has new Jim Bound cam, lifters and push rods and if the compression Is ok now maybe I can just do bearings from bottom without removing engine. I will confirm with Ken and take his advice. Glad to hear that others have had good experience with Ken's engines. Everything he has done for me so far has been fair and first class. I had visions of doing this job on my schedule maybe putting aluminum heads, fuel injection, increased compression etc but the coach has it's own schedule which seems to be to be parked in a repair shop. Five months at Coop and now six months at Kens shop. It did spend 5days coming up from Florida where it went through three HEI modules and two coils, blew exhaust off and brakes failed. Then it spent two months in my driveway up on blocks where I replaced the brakes twice and went through four gallons of fluid trying to bleed it with
pressure vacuum and foot pumping after which it went by flatbed to Ken's. Someday I actually may take it camping if I can afford the gas after I finally get it running. But first I have to replace the Roof AC and the house heat and fix the leaky sewer line and install an awning. For a few bucks more I can buy a big diesel pickup and tow the GMC to the campground.

Consider it a Learning Experience And remember, this week only, Camping World has tyres on sale for that Diesel pusher. $770 per installed. And, since it's Cummins powered, ask the local Cummins shop what the oil change is gonna cost you. Clessie would be proud.

If it was me, if it's not rapping or knocking, I would ASSUME the bearings are ok. I would direct my attention to the oil pump and especially the bypass spring system. Also first I would remove the cooler addaptor, thread a new filter right to the engine and take a reading.

Jon, I have been working on internal combustion engines since I was about
10 years old. My first was a single cylinder engine from a wringer washing
machine. Too many others followed to mention. If you are able to remove the
oil pan from a gmc in the chassis, you would be the first one to accomplish
that task. It lives directly over the transmission and final drive. Either
the engine must be lifted out through the interior of the coach, or the
transmission/final drive must be removed before you can have access to the
engine. IF THE BEARINGS ARE BAD, WHERE DO YOU THINK ALL THAT METAL NOW
RESIDES? IT is lurking inside the oil system just waiting until you
increase the oil pressure with a new pump and fresh set of bearings. Then
the higher pressure will flush it out into the galleries so that it can
destroy your brand new bearings, to say nothing about your paid labor. If
you have a bottomless supply of money, do what you want with it, your
choice. The correct way is to remove it, tank it, mike it, clean it well
enough to eat out of, repair or replace what you find. Carefully reassemble
it being as sanitary as possible. JUST MAYBE YOU'LL GET LUCKY , and the
residual crud in the cooler and lines won't kill all your work.
