Appie you can change them with the wheels on, just turn the steering wheel full over to one side and go in behind the wheel.
Loosen and take off the lower nut, then take the upper bolt and nut off, compres/push down the shock, use a breaker bar or a large screewdriver to push the shock off the lower mount.

To mount the new shock compress it and mount it from the lower end attaching it to the lower mount first

Thanks
I do read the manual, but sometimes there are people with practical experience that outwit the manual ☺️
Wonder how she is going to behave with the new shocks

Appie,

And there are a lot of people who will make suggestions that have NO idea of the person's abilities to whom they have made the suggestions.

The person on the receiving end follows the suggestions and "f's" up the job and guess who bears the consequences?

A good maintenance manual is written so that someone with reasonable skills can complete the job properly and SAFELY.

I know a lot of "tricks" that I would NOT recommend to someone that I was not sure had the skills to complete the job properly and safely.

What problem were you trying to solve by replacing the shocks?

Regards,
Rob M.

You have a good point Rob

But is this case it is hardly rocket science, I should maybe say that you should set it in park and apply the hand brake and be sure to mount the shock the right way with the bottom down, but other than that ?

Ofcourse Rob has a point, luckely I am smart enough to select advices. And I am quite confident with Espen s advices.
And no Espen, you do not have to tell me to pull the handbrake etc, but ofcourse you know that

I feel the front is a bit wobly and soft. As most other stuff is done. Torsionbar, steering box, bearing axels Shocks may be the finishing part as they might be 40 od years.
As they are not expensive I ll change them and see what happend
The last shocks I took of my volvo fell apart
