I'm not sure if I'd try it for a tank, but maybe for a piece of trim.

I believe Sirums GMC did use or perhaps still does use a router to friction weld fittings onto the tanks.

A soldering iron with a flat blade works just fine.

The tips with the side-feed hole look like they'd work pretty well. This one gets the best reviews, plus it comes with some colored stock assortment.

To me it didn't look like welding as much as plastic soldering. I don't think the flat sheets of that thickness really melted, only the stock in the dremel. The Eclipse VLJ pioneered the use of friction stir welding for assembling the aircraft

The various fittings on an RV fresh water tank are "spin welded" into their desired location.

Plastic cracks because it's softening agents and plasticizers have exited
the building. (outgassed). If you repair it by any methods, know that it a
temporary expedient. Real cure is to send it to plastic heaven and replace
it sooner than later. Been there many times. How important is your time and
how do you want to spend what precious little of it you have left?

So, having looked at the dremel and soldering irons, I decided to put in some time experimenting on a cheap craigslist kayak with a crappy patch by the PO. I dug up an old Wen 200 watt soldering pistol what had a flat-iron tip about the size of a postage stamp. The kayak is red, so for 'rods' I cut up Folger's coffee cans (hdpe). It worked great. The stuff has a low, low melting point and flashes & feels about like working with 50/50 solder.

In reviewing the soldering irons listed above, I had concerns that the 80w model wouldn't be powerful enough. The 200w was too hot. 80 would probably work better. Better still would be a rheostat heat controller.
