During my previous life in GMC world, Mobil 1 (oil, grease, and ATF) seemed to have been a favorite on this forum, such as it was.

I am getting ready to install my Ragusa tranny pan, and am wondering where Mobil 1 stands with this group. I still use Mobil 1 oil so that is not my question. Thanks.

Larry

I use Mobil one where ever I can. The ATF is expensive in the auto parts stores. They no longer carry it at Walmart however Walmart has another name brand of synthetic in 4 gallon containers that I was considering using when I replace the trans soon as the cost is a lot better. I don't think trans fluid is as critical as motor oil as far as brands is concerned.

I have a Manny Switch Pitch and he only uses Mobil 1 in SPs because of the extra heat that could build when in switch. It is $10 a quart which makes you wonder if there are flakes of gold in it.

Larry,

Mr. Transmission, Manny Trovao, says that Mobil 1 Synthetic Transmission Fluid is the best fluid available; however, it is not
necessary unless your GMC has a switch pitch transmission.

When you install our new Ragusa pan I would suggest using Permatex Aviation Gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket as that's what
Manny uses.

Regards,
Rob M.

I think Matt said Dexron is done at 305. Wondering what Mobil1 is done at and if worth the money as oppose to more frequent drain /fill with conventional. Also isn't all Dexron technically synthetic???

Close John,

I was not that specific. The fact is that all dino based lube oils disassociate at 305°F. When had my trans completely empty, I refilled with Mobil1 not so much for the temperature, but for the fact that the synthetics are more stable with age than the dino based oils.
And Yes, It isn't cheap.
Tell me what part of these beast is cheap?
Is it cost effective?
Probably not..... So Why?
Because if I have a problem and do over heat the transmission fluid, the expensive fluid has a good possibility of limiting the damage by more than the 120$us it cost to fill with it.

Matt

My coach has a trans temp gauge and you would be surprised at how quickly a trans heats up when you climb a hill even when not towing. Upon seeing the charts here elsewhere, showing how quickly the ATF deteriorates with heat, I was quick to install a trans cooler and really do not have to worry as much about the heat build up anymore. If your coach does not have a trans cooler synthetic ATF is a must if you encounter uphill grades and/or tow.

WARNING! Do not install a transmission temperature gauge; they cause a huge amount of driver stress! Twisted Evil

And that is on my list of things to do, alongside Amsoil ATF. I'm sure the trans temp will go up a bit on the climb to Mt Charlston this summer.

Btw George, I may need a hand figuring out my low RPM stumble and it's still running pretty sluggish.
