There is a newly reported failure of a tranny cooler that allowed coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. It was an original radiator and NOT the aluminum 'Griffin' radiator.

I have read about the aluminum exchanger failures but I perked up when the report of a standard radiator failing. Pictures showed the transmission burping foamy-purple guck. The poor fellow is a new owner and pretty discouraged. Luckily he didn't drive far and perhaps the transmission will survive.
So, my question for those here: How many have disconnected the internal cooler and replaced it with an external? I would hate to loose my Manny Tranny to something I could avoid. I currently have both internal and external. My radiator is original as far as I know. The external is an old PO coil and I am going to replace it.
I am thinking perhaps I should get a larger unit and disconnect the radiator unit. How large should it be if I use only an external. I do have a temp gauge to check on an air only unit.

BTW, the owner noticed he needed to add water to the radiator overflow tank. But the coach being new, he never dreamed it was leaking into the transmission until he saw leakage. Unfortunately it was not green antifreeze.

If it was not antifreeze what do you think the liquid was. I would think that a leaking transmission cooler would pick up antifreeze.
How do you know for sure that it was the cooler? Did he pressure test it? That is easy to do using the inlet and outlet connections.
If its coming from the transmission it also could be the seal between the transmission and the final drive unit. Did he check the fluid level of the final drive and also the color of the fluid in the final drive?
