Jim,
I presume your "three lines" are the bottom, middle, and top scale marks.
If so, one can only assume that the bottom one should = 0 psi the top one
the maximum for which the sender is rated, and the middle one 1/2 of the
top one. Big assumption!
The real dilemma is that "maximum". There are at least two common senders
available from NAPA, OP6637 for a maximum of 60 psi and OP6636 for a
maximum of 80 psi. (per the chart at http://www.bdub.net/gmcmhparts/#ENGINE
).
The only way I'd ascribe any value to any meter mark is to calibrate it
myself using a known standard measuring the same source as the subject
meter. Otherwise, I'd say the middle mark means I've got "Some" and the
top one means I've got "More".

A pretty good read, Ken, until I got to the last paragraph where you
promptly lost me in technical jargonism...
You do get the point across though!

Ken,
Using your logic the bottom line (ha ha) would mean "barely enough?"

Mike,
All the last paragraph says is connect the OP sender and a good meter to a
common air line and crank the pressure up slowly, marking the OEM gauge to
match what the meter says at several pressures.
That better, Teach?

marks appear to represent 1/4 1/2 & 3/4. This is a completely stock Royale with 40,000 miles so I assume the gage & sender are original. Put in Rob's 15-40 Rotella and it went to the 3/4 mark on startup and about 1/2 when warmed up. Hope that is OK

I just went through this with Dick Paterson a few weeks back on my coach I replaced the sender with a new OEM type one. 80 PSI is the top most line and of course the 0 PSI is the bottom most line. The middle mark is 40 PSI. Dick explained the the check / bypass valve in the oil pump is set to open at 60 PSI so on a cold engine you should never seen over 3/4 scale. That is exactly where mine reads cold.
As a side note, A poor or open electrical connection between the gage and the sender or a poor ground at the gage or sender will cause the gage to read high (not low).
