I bought a Ragusa tranny pan at the Branson Convention and am now actually thinking of installing it. I want to get a temp gauge installed and took the plug out and went to my "fastener" store to get an idea of the size and thread count of that plug. It seems to be a size used only in North Korea or Mars.

So, what is the consensus on the size of that threaded opening?

I think that it is a pipe thread. But to be sure why don’t you just telephone Ragusa?

Thanks to all. I will say that the plug calipers at 1/2" OD. My NPT chart shows that diameter being 1/4" NPT but the thread count is more like 20 threads per inch, not 18.

Emery, yes, I will call Ragusa but I was trying to get something done yesterday, which was Sunday.

Again, thanks to all replies and PMs. Not rocket surgery, I know.

Larry,

The port is 1/4 pipe with 18 threads per inch.

There is no such thing as a 1/4 pipe with 20 threads per inch.

Visit your local hardware store and buy a 1/4" pipe to 1/8" pipe reducer and let us know what happens when you screw the reducer
into the pan.

Was your Ragusa pan bought new or used? Was the drain plug shouldered and have a an o-ring on it?

I'm wondering if the PO of the pan installed the wrong plug.

Blanking plugs for AN, JIC, & ORB type fittings are shouldered, have a 1/2-20 thread and use a crush washer or o-ring as the method of dealing. They will screw into a 1/4NPT threaded hole, binding slightly as the shoulder bottoms out. This is not the recommended application but I have seen it used in a pinch.

Oops! You're right, I goofed!

Of course there is a 1/2" x 20 TPI tap! I bought two magnetic drain plugs for Double Trouble's oil pan like that! DOUH!
