On the Firestone Air Compressor (part # WR1-760-9285) 150 max PSI from Gateway, what is he best way to hook in the positive line, as the OEM has a male outlet and the Firestone is female? picture is here: http://cbabc.com/air/ I've tried local electrician and they want to just cut the old one out and splice it on to the Firestone.... Anyone have a schematic or advice? Also where the best place is to ground.

Thanks, JT

Best would be to replace both ends with new connectors. Use a very good crimper and make a tight connection. If you have them, Anderson Power Poles is the way that I would go. With The Anderson Power Pole design, you can get some fairly high amperage connectors. It does take a special crimper to make a good connection.
If you have any friends who are Ham Radio nerds, they generally would have both the connectors and the special crimper.

The only way I would do that connection, is to have a dedicated feed, of a minimum 12awg, preferably 10awg, to that compressor via a relay.

In how I did mine, I thought was very easy. I installed a resettable 30 amp fuse on the firewall. fed a line from the hot side of battery off the battery isolator. then ran a wire from that to a relay at the compressor. then I used that coach wire in that picture to trip the relay to power up the compressor.

I usually do not like to add stuff like that off the battery, but clean/good power is good for that compressor.

if you are confused. send me a PM, and I can call, or can take some pictures for you.

Mine (ViAir) is fed through a 30 amp fuse from the vehicle positive pole on the firewall through a relay which is activated by the feed which used to power the now dead Firestone compressor. It has worked flawlessly for about a year.

G'day,

JT asked me this question OFF NET and I suggested he run the compressor through a relay as Johnny (and I) have, I searched Gene's
website and the PhotoSite for a wiring diagram but could not find one and suggested he contact the GMCnet.

Anybody have or know where to find a wiring diagram for a Firestone air compressor through a relay.

Regards,
Rob M.

I updated this page with a few more pictures- http://cbabc.com/air/ shows under the hood, how the old hook-up looks (doesn't look bad, so I'm not sure I need to replace it), and then I followed the line to show where it goes into.

Is there any problem with just splicing the old one positive onto the new positive? I'm wondering if the line already goes into a 30 amp fuse, or do I need to buy one/ completely rewire this to the firewall? If I need to buy one, any suggestions? because I tried google searching and there's all kinds of different types. also not sure what kind of relay to get...

Thanks, JT

OK let's see if I understand your problem correctly. Your old compressor has a male positive connector and your new compressor has a female connector. There are two simple solutions.

1. Cut the female connector off of the new compressor. Then crimp and solder a new male connector on the new compressor positive wire. You can get get a new connector at Home Depot or probably most auto parts store.

2. Do not cut anything. Build yourself a 1" or 2" adapter out of a piece of 12 ga. wire with and 2 male connectors crimped and soldered on the wire ends. Plug the adapter in to both female connectors and you are done. The also make an adapter that has 2 male connections. Try your local auto parts stores, Home Depot, or Radio Shack.

As far a ground goes. Ground the new compressor to the same place that the old one was connected. If you can not find what you need, send me a PM and I'll make you one and throw it in USPS mail.

G'day,

I just stumbled on this email:

-----Original Message-----
From: Robert Mueller [mailto:robmueller@iinet.net.au]
Sent: Sunday, February 01, 2015 2:23 PM
To: 'gmclist@temp.gmcnet.org'
Subject: Relay and connector

G'day,

I stumbled on to this today and reckon it's great relay / connector / pigtail combination for various and sundry items you want to power on the GMC.

Relay:

Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/lxymk2k

Full URL:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/BWD0/R4153/N0956.oap?ck=Search_relay+kits+-+universal_1217304_-1&keyword=relay+kits+-+universal

Note that this relay is 24VDC / 30 AMP therefore at 12 VDC it will handle 60 AMP that is plenty for most things in a GMC.

Connector / pigtail:

Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/k6lp3zp

Full URL:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/BWD0/PT5584.oap?year=1975&make=Oldsmobile&model=Custom%2BCruiser&vi=1217304&ck=Search_pt5584_ 1217304_-1&keyword=pt5584

Note that when used in conjunction with the relay above you have a sealed unit. That's excellent considering how wet things get under the GMC hood!

Rob,

That's gross overkill for our applications, especially when considering the
cost. I've got a whole bank of 30A relays under the hood of Tweety Bird
which probably cost me [/color]

It really doesn't work that way. The coil for the relay takes 24 volts to pull it in. 12 volts may not actuate the relay.

Emery,

Proof positive that I'm electrically challenged! :-)

I'll try to find one like this that runs on 12vdc.

Good luck with your operation!

I wonder if running 60A through a 30A relay is covered by the "Limited Lifetime Warranty"?

I suspect it is, if nobody asks...
