It's a 1973, and it's been parked the last 8 years, though the owner (who
has 3 of them) has started it periodically, and it starts immediately, and
seems to run good (as far as can be told without driving it), I have put it
in D and R, and it does push agaisnt the chocks. The interior is either
good enough, or missing (no couch or dinet up front, and bare hardwood for
a floor, fridge likely bad), needs new tires, and a full maintence cycle
(lube all bearings, change brake fluid, engine & transmission, etc). And
I'll probably put Sully bags on it as soon as I can.
It has just over 50k miles, and his asking price is $2600, which strikes me
as either fair, or a touch high. If it goes three years without major work,
I'd be fairly happy. No, I'm not going to gut it, I'm going to use it, and
fix up one thing at a time, I already have a couch/bunk to install (well, I
need the bottom part, I have the back and belts).
Thanks,
Ron

Do you really believe that in 42 years it has only gone 50K miles?
It likely has at least 150K and possibly 250K. The odometer starts at 0 after 100K.

Would a carfax report on the VIN give useful information as to actual milage....assuming at some honest
owners?
We found it useful when buying cars for our kids but we were not looking at anything older than the late 1990s........

Pete,
I am not sure about the carfax but I think records are the only way to be sure. No body believes my coach has 13,500 miles, but I have the original owners maintenance records from 78 to 07. (he hand wrote 2 copies of all the letters he ever sent to GM or cinnabar) If the owner was lying about the millage it sure was a long con. Without any records you are just going to have to judge based on condition.

I doubt that Carfax would have any into on the coach as it has been off the road for so many years.

Well, the petals look a little used, I think the seats are original (or
were they just cheap about recovering?), I find that plausible, but I do
see your point. The Onan has low hours too. The cabinets and such I think
are original, and not beat up. Rear seats look good.
Motor would have had to have been rebuilt if it has 150k miles, it doesn't
smoke. Could get a Carfax on it.

The price, $2600, seems reasonable for what you have described.
Perhaps make any deal contingent upon it driving and shifting to your satisfaction.

That I do not think is too far off. if you do the work yourself, a few thousand in parts could get you a relaible coach if the engine/tranny do not blow up. And even if they do, you can build alot of coach from that starting point.
2600, should mean that you should not have to paint it. Frame is not rotted out, or bogies and pins shot. windows are all OK, and usable.
If you start out by putting new tires on it, new brakes and fuel lines. the coach will get you to a campsite and back for next 5-7 years, you will be OK. any coach can still have an engine/tranny go south. and will should need new tires in the next 5-7 years as well.
Also not sure where you live, that has an effect on what a coach is worth.

Being a 73 - check the AC dash air and the Leveling system. Check the
tires for dates.

Pedal wear is a tipoff - worn edge on the brake pedal indicates 100K plus miles. Which isn't a dealbreaker. Offer him 2 Large in Yankee money, contigent on running and shifting properly, and try to hit 2300 tops, just so you can say you got a concession If you've time and a tester, warm the engine, pull the sparking plugs, and compression test. If none are grossly out of line from the others, and it holds decent oil pressure (Use a mechanical guage, the supplied ones are notorious for being inaccurate over time)idling hot and at 2K rpm or so, go for it. Tires, fuel lines, brake rebuild, and you're ready to camp. Spend the next 10 - 15K over time in bits and pieces as needed, instead of all at once.

Oh, and remember... you're getting a 43 year old truck that's been parked and a 43 year old vacant house. There will be gremlins here and there.

I think there are exceptions. Some of us old school drivers were taught to slow down before you get there, time your red lights and keep rolling. Take Off slow and don't use the clutch. I know of a lot of million mile trucks with original clutch and very little wear on the brake pedal.

One thing....cause I got burnt by this.
Start it and drive it till it gets hot.
After you get back, do not shut it off, let it idle, look for leaks, drips, smoke.
Listen that the engine runs smooth with no funny sounds.
If you can't drive it, It's not worth 2000.
If the tires are bad, tell him to put useable ones on and then you will talk.
the coach should drive like a big fat van and steer with one hand.
If it's all over the road, it has more than 50k miles on it and will take $$$ to drive straight
watch the owner, see if he gets nervous about anything.
Also;
Pressurize the water system.
Check the leveling system, put it all the way down, all the way up and at travel.

Where ever you live ???? (no signature info), check the Black List for
people in the area...someone will know something about it.
Read what Chuck wrote.!!!
It is my opinion that there are NO GMC's with less that 100,000 miles . If
Daniel DeLuca has the paperwork, then he has the only one ! If a 73 has
less that 100,000, let's say 99,999 divided by 42, that's less than 2400 a
year... Yes there must be a lot of them out there . Sorry, not buying that
package.

I found this photo essay on brake pedal wear and mileage to be useful:

By this standard, The wicked mistress™ may be on her third, or maybe fourth, trip around the block. Oh if I had only known...
76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center...

I believe my 77 Eleganza had 56K when I bought it. Pedal wear was the tipoff. The POs used it a fair amount but dry camped around Nashville mainly. Drove it to Panama City a few times. They bought it from the original owners, an older couple somewhere in west Georgia and were told that they used it regularity but rarely went far.
When I tore the engine down it confirmed the low mileage. NO ridge ring and no wear except on the couple connecting rod bearings where the anti-freeze broke down the oil.
