Years ago there were steel, or glass pack mufflers. At one time I had a muffler that I bought that was a little too loud. So I put a half of a pad of vary coarse steel wool in the inlet. Helped some. So I added the other half. Sounded great. And didn't seem to impair flow. Used it for about 3 years. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,

I have done the same thing but I used a couple of stainless steel pot scrubbers.

When it comes to mufflers, there is no replacement for volume. If you have a generator that is not on a slide out, go for an automotive muffler and all you will hear is mechanical noise.
