G'day,

I disassembled the Ford Azure Pump yesterday and took some photos of the guts:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6633-brake-booster-vacuum-pump.html

I believe this is a higher quality part than anything else out there.

Note the sealed ball bearings on the large end of the connecting rods AND the counter balances!

Regards,
Rob M.

This gives me a bit more info to help in my quest for a parts source to repair these pumps. They sure are well built, so hopefully nobody will ever need parts :)

Burt,

I included the parts label SPECIFICALLY for YOU! :-)

When one considers the duty cycle of this pump on an electric vehicle with no other vacuum source and the backup duty cycle on a GMC
I believe the pump will outlast us all!

Rob M.

Even though it looks well built, I doubt anyone is going to provide service parts for this. I suspect it is a throw-away part.

Les,

Since I will be installing one of these pumps in both my GMC's I solved the problem by purchasing a spare for $115 before he ran
out.

I did a bit more research into this pump and discovered that it is also used on the f150 ecoboost pickups till end of 2012. It doesn't have a very stellar reputation in that application due a high failure rate. A Google search on "f150 ecoboost vacuum pump" will return a good amount of info.

Here is a YouTube video that shows the internals of a failed pump. You need to fast forward about 2/3 of the way through.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sxo2QVwbDkI

The failure is likely due to environmental conditions, so these pumps will likely survive a long happy life in the types of conditions seen in a GMC MH.

I'm still going to get one for my coach, but will probably disassemble and treat the aluminum parts to some corrosion protection.

On the f150 ecoboost they went to an engine driven pump starting in 2013 according to the limited reading I did on the problem.

From what I can tell, the failure is corrosion related, and I'm willing to bet it occurred mainly on vehicles that see snow & salt.

The F150 also uses vacuum from the same pump to lock and unlock the front hubs on 4x4 versions. I bet that is helping to introduce corrosive contaminates into the pump, causing some of the internal corrosion.

Finding this info was a surprise to me, but also interesting as it sheds light on the weaknesses of what appears to be a decent pump design.

Well, at least there's now a known source of replacement pumps: RockAuto
has them for ONLY $356.79.

While looking for more info on the Ford Azure pump, I came across another style of pump that has potential as a men's mall pick.

Rock auto has them listed new for $120

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=2577478&jnid=2&jpid=0

This pump appears to be used in all sorts of vehicles. So far I have found eBay listings for Volvo S, C, & XC series, Audi A4 & A6, Chevy Cruze, Camaro, Sonic, Equinox, HHS, Cadillac CTS, STS, Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice ETC.

I'm wondering how well they perform and how noisy they are.

It would seem that some sort of a shield could be fabricated to keep the water, etc. off that pump in any particular installation.

Engine driven would not help us in our intended use as a backup when the engine quits!

Les,

Excellent find!

Holy crap that is some SERIOUS corrosion! Somehow water is getting into the pump and that doesn't make sense!

It could be that Brian is correct and the water is being sucked in past the diaphragm sealing surfaces. We can run a test to see if
that is happening by running the pump and dripping water on the area where the "head" meets the "block. If it disappears into the
pump that's the problem.

I think that it is where the pump is located in the F-150 is causing or contributing to the problem, Brian even says that the
problem does not exist in the 3.5 liter Taurus Ecoboost. I did some Googling but I couldn't find out if the Taurus has this pump or
not.

I noted the following in the video:

5:16 minutes - water dripping off the pump as he removed it.

5:48 minutes - side of replacement pump has "X" pattern reinforcements and in the comments he notes it's plastic

7:10 minutes - wonder what the red - white - red "parts" are that are on top of the cap that covers the "crankcase" air outflow cap.

I scanned the comments and the mechanic noted the following:

Ford Tech Makuloco: You could definitely try a sealer around the end caps. But I think most of it is coming in through the air
intake port.

Me: the air intake port is the vacuum line that goes to the booster; he must mean the air exhaust port.

Ford Tech Makuloco: Yeah crazy right, there is no protection for it; it is all right out in the open for the rain snow and salt
spray

Me: I reckon that the aluminum has been exposed to salt from the level of corrosion.

Ford Tech Makuloco: The new one was all plastic so they shouldn't have these problems anymore here on out.

Me: AHA! That explains the "X" reinforced sides.

I am going to make a little sheet metal cover and epoxy it over the exhaust port so that water cannot drip onto the port and be
absorbed into the filter in the port.

Rob M.

I did a bit more research into this pump and discovered that it is also used on the f150 ecoboost pickups till end of 2012. It
doesn't have a very stellar reputation in that application due a high failure rate. A Google search on "f150 ecoboost vacuum pump"
will return a good amount of info.

Here is a YouTube video that shows the internals of a failed pump. You need to fast forward about 2/3 of the way through.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sxo2QVwbDkI

The failure is likely due to environmental conditions, so these pumps will likely survive a long happy life in the types of
conditions seen in a GMC MH.

I'm still going to get one for my coach, but will probably disassemble and treat the aluminum parts to some corrosion protection.

Since the pump in the video appears to be seized, The water is also getting into the motor somehow. The Plastic replacement pump might solve the body corrosion, and hopefully they found a way to better protect the motor area on them as well.

According to one of the Ford truck forums, someone here in Canada purchased a replacement pump from the dealer for $180 earlier this year. If this is true, then the prices are dropping to something reasonable for a plastic version. I need to visit my local Ford dealer, so I'm going to ask what the present price is. I'll also check to see if the new pumps are indeed plastic, or black powder coated aluminum.

""Les,

I did some Googling but I couldn't find out if the Taurus has this pump or
not. ""
More and more vehicles are using vacuum pumps these days. When mine craps out I'll move to the next design of the moment. I'm sure not going to lose a minute's worth of sleep over it.

I checked with the local Ford dealer and the current replacement pump has a plastic body. It sells retail here in Montreal for $256 CAD, and in the US, online Ford dealers are retailing at $406 USD. The parts guy tells me that they keep several in stock as it is a fast mover. The newer pump has only been on the market for a bit less than a year, so they don't have any durability results.

It is rare that I can find a CDN dealer selling something for less than what it sells in the US. :)

Les,

This is interesting according to www.xe.com $256 CDN converts to $203 USD or half the price in the USA!

Over the weekend I will head down to my workshop to investigate Brian's theory that water is getting in past the diaphragm seals. I
will also come up with a "cover" for the air exhaust port so water won't drip on the filter that's in it.

Regards,
Rob M.

Les,

MORE good info!

Now it's beginning to make sense!

If this pump is used to lock (vacuum) and unlock (vent vacuum) the front hubs then air (along with water / salt) could go in the
crankcase air exhaust vent.

Rob M.

I bet that is helping to introduce
corrosive contaminates into the pump, causing some of the internal corrosion.

Finding this info was a surprise to me, but also interesting as it sheds light on the weaknesses of what appears to be a decent pump
design.
