On my way back from Roosevelt, all of a sudden I smelled burning rubber, belt squeeling and gradual overheating on the downhill back home. It was not at all what I suspected. Any fun guesses?

Doesn't sound like fun to me. If it was overheating down hill it must have involved the water pump

Rubber air baffle/hose or similar came loose and rubbed on fan? burning the rubber and reducing cooling air flow

I would say an old radiator hose sagged when it got hot and touched one of
the belts, slowing cutting a hole in the hose and causing radiator fluid
loss and the engine to overheat. This happened to me about 13 years
ago going from Sacramento to Reno via the Donner Pass.

That was it. It rubbed a hole in the hose and the hole pissed right on the water pump pulley causing all 3 belts to slip. My first reaction was a seized AC compressor, but shutting it off only reduced the belt squeal. Then I thought that maybe the fan was rubbing on the shroud due to a sagging engine mount. In the end it was something that I had to keep an eye on because how close the hose is to the alternator belt, but apparently I wasn't watching it closely enough. I'm going to make up a small bracket to support that hose from sagging--in fact I recall that someone made one up recently. Given all that I did check the fan clearance to my shroud and it is getting pretty close at the bottom so it's time for a new mount.

Bob,

I noticed that the upper radiator hose on Double Trouble (455 powered) sat on the upper left (driver side) fan shroud bracket. When
I lifted it up the hose a bit I noted the spot that rested on the shroud bracket had a small indent caused by chaffing. I cut a
piece of old radiator hose about 3 inches long wrapped it around the hose and tie wrapped it in place. So far so good.
