We're planning a trip to the Oregon coast next month, coming from California.
We'll head north on I-5, then to the top corner of the state (Fort Stevens),
so I'm trying to figure out the least scary way to go.

How is highway 26 as a route in a GMC?
Other routes that are good/bad?

thanks,
Karen

26 is fine. 101 is also a good route up the coast.

I would go 101.
Stay off I-5. It's too hard to keep up with traffic.

Hi Karen

You might think about using highway 97 past Crater Lake, and pick up highway 26 at Madras. There are quite a few things to see on
that highway and it moves much slower than the interstate.

If you are going to try and stop at any of the pull-outs on highway 101 you will be best going from north to south. All the
pull-outs are on the west side of the road, not ideal when you are traveling north.

Karen,
I have driven the Oregon Coast on 101 and I-5 border to border both directions multiple times. I've also traveled all the paved roads connecting I-5 and 101. Including the road from Gold Beach to Agness and then on to Merlin. (Look that one up on your map book)

Once you're above Redding even I-5 is an enjoyable drive, but the coast route is certainly more scenic.

My favorite hiways between I-5 and 101 are 199 from Grants Pass along the Smith River to 101 near the border and Hiway 138/38 along the Umpqua River from Sutherlin on I-5 to Reedsport on the coast.

There are several Ore. State parks along 101. All are nice and inexpensive.

I can give you RV Parks and restaurants in Grants Pass, Brookings, Bandon, Coos Bay, Florence, and Lincoln City if you have any interest.

Your GMC will have no problem with any of these routes or hiway 26.

Go slow, stop often and enjoy the trip.

Karen, what Gene said, I concur. Except that you need to detour from 101
to Salem, and spend a couple of nights with us. Judy will show you the wine
country and I will fix good food. Any road in Oregon is a great GMC road.
Lots of state park campgrounds as well as private ones too. Come and enjoy
yourselves.

Thanks Gene, I'd love any recommendations. For the first part of the trip, we have reservations at various parks
so are fairly constrained. It may be possible to wander a little more on the way back, depending on how things are going.

thanks,

Thanks Jim, that is a generous offer. Oregon sure seems to have a lot more nice parks at reasonable prices than California.
Around here, it's often $60/night for a cramped spot in a parking lot with no hookups. Kinda takes the fun out of it.

In addition to State and Federal Forest Campgrounds, there are many County
Parks that offer overnight stays. The Federal Forest campgrounds are
primitive with few electrical and sewer dumps, but they are cheap,
particularly if you have an "America the Beautiful" lifetime pass for
seniors. If you are interested in a particular area, let me know. We have
probably stayed there at one time or another. Do you have a toad?

No toad. I've been looking for a 96-98 2dr tracker, but it turns out that's harder than it seems. The most
suitable ones seem to disappear off craigslist in less than a day -- far too short a time to travel any distance for one.
But, I'll keep looking.

For this trip, we'll bring bicycles.
