An email received from Emery Stora (GMCMI past president):
I saw the surgeon today. He has now scheduled my surgery. He said it is
going to be very complicated. He will operate on four vertebra and it will
involve removing all cartilage and the discs from all four of them then
grinding inside the vertebrae to make room for my spinal cord and then use
rods and screws to hold everything in place and pack everything with ground
up bone which will solidify and fuse everything together.
He said it will take about 12 hours of surgery. He says there is too much
risk to keep me under that long at one time so he will do the top two on
April 22 in a 4 or 5 hour surgery reaching them through an incision in my
side. Then he will do the two lower ones on May 8 in a 7 to 8 hour surgery
through my back.
He says the recovery period will be about 3-1/2 months which will be the
end of August.
So, I guess that will shoot my whole summer.
He doesn't want me to lift over 10 pounds during all that time so I'll
really be limited in what I can do.
Hopefully I'll be all recovered and able to drive to Rapid City in
September. It'll be great to be able to walk again without pain.
Sure hope the Patterson convention goes well. I'll miss everyone.

All the best to Emery.
I had the same operation in the 90s, with the exception of only 2
instead of 4 glued together. Doesn't hinder me at all. 2-3 month is very
optimistic. I was allowed to sit again after 3 month... A friend of mine
had three glued together and had to wear a corset for 6 month... But
even he was absolutely pain free after the recovery period.
big  - everything will be fine!

Wish you a speedy recovery. I've enjoyed reading your posts on the Forum.
I've hurt my lower back a couple of times, and it was, by far, the worst
pain I have ever experienced.
I've avoided a recurrence by being careful what and how I lift....but I fear
surgery is somewhere in my future as well.

Wow, it's amazing to hear all these stories from folks, it makes me wonder why we have so many different ways to handle similar situations. I had the same surgery as Emery, it lasted 4 hours max, was up walking that night, went home in 2 days, rode home in the motorhome so I could lay down, wore a soft corset only when I was up, for 3 months, was pain free as far as the leg pain immediately, and had no restrictions after 3 months. I couldn't pick up anything heavier than a milk jug for 2 months, could begin my walking exercise program by the 2nd month of recovery. I've also had 2 fusions in my neck, wore a collar for 3 months all the time, but was pain free immediately. I would recommend getting a hospital bed at home for your recovery, it made things so much easier for getting in and out. Makes me wonder..... Either way good luck Emery.

Wishing well and a speedy recovery Emery. The surgery works!
I had the same surgery myself back in 2010, 4 discs, L2-S1 screws, rods etc. Took about 4 hours all at once in my case. After the surgery I was experiencing so much pain that I could not move. However very quickly learned that all that pain was from the bandage pulling on a hair! When the bandage was changed no pain from the surgery what soever. Also had the brace for several months but now don't need it. About three months after surgery was out working in the yard, digging, lifting, working on RV, just abut as much activity as before but with no leg pain.

We'll miss you and Michelle at Patterson, but look forward to seeing you in
Rapid City.
From all the shared stories, it
sounds like you can expect good results. Keep the faith!

Emery: "Hopefully I'll be all recovered and able to drive to Rapid City in
September. It'll be great to be able to walk again without pain.
Sure hope the Patterson convention goes well. I'll miss everyone."
I saw this on Facebook and commented on what a remarkable attitude Emery has. He is facing a very unpleasant immediate future with this upcoming surgery, but he's looking past that to a better, brighter, pain free future. We're all with you on that Emery. Best wishes on the surgery and recovery, and (some of us) will be praying for you and the docs.

Emery; I have two GMC's and have met you several times including at
Albequerque Baloon Festival rally in (90?) Well, I just had back surgery
for L4 and L5 on Feb 19 and am scheduled for L3 and L4 on April 19 =/-.
Dr Hae Dong Jho, MD, PHD was my choice of surgeons. He does minimally
invasive Neurogy and Endoscopic Brain and Spinal surgery. He makes an
incision about 1 1/2 inches long, then inserts a camera and instrument for
removing the material encroaching on the nerve. I have stenosis . I arrived
at the hospital at 6:00Am. was prepared for surgery which was done about
9:30 and lasted about 1 hour. I was in my hospital room for lunch, spent
the night there and left the hospital next AM at 7:00AM . I used a walker
to go from my room to our car and have been walking around in the house
with a cane . The pain was much less and now gone except for a bit that
requires the next surgery. Really surprising No removal of vertebrae
metal pins, or fusing joints. He's the only Dr in Pittsburgh area using
this minimal invasion method. Look him up on the internet. But I have
frends who had surgery like yours and that worked also for them. Good luck
and best wishes for a great recovery. Andy M
